I was a technical instructor for an oil/gas company for just over 5 years. We focused on competency based training along with ensuring skills would transfer into the workplace. Prior to that, I graduated from a highly technical private engineering school with a Bachelor's degree in Chemical Engineering. The school was on a trimester schedule so that we could finish a normal 5 year degree in only 4 years so it was a highly demanding program. When I was in high school, I volunteered to tutor students in math and science during my study hall hour. I was also in AP math, science and english classes. I tested out of Calculus I in college by scoring a perfect score on the AP math test out of high school.

I am an active teacher. I want students to understand the subject in the context of their own lives as opposed to just learning definitions. If they can realate the information to an actual happening, they are more likely to remember. In terms of test preparation, aside from learning the information it is important to work on test-taking skills (relaxation, focus, etc.). If the lecturer teaches the concept as if only a very few can understand this, the student builds up breakers that will inhibit theor learning.
