I was a technical instructor for an oil/gas company for just over 5 years. We focused on competency based training along with ensuring skills would transfer into the workplace. Prior to that, I graduated from a highly technical private engineering school with a Bachelor's degree in Chemical Engineering. The school was on a trimester schedule so that we could finish a normal 5 year degree in only 4 years so it was a highly demanding program. When I was in high school, I volunteered to tutor students in math and science during my study hall hour. I was also in AP math, science and english classes. I tested out of Calculus I in college by scoring a perfect score on the AP math test out of high school.

I have found through my 6 years of teaching students, that flexibility is a key component. Explaining a difficult concept to a student should be customized to each individual students' needs. I encourage students to always ask questions even if they think they are stupid. Everyone has to ask those questions at some point in their career! I find out what exactly the student is lacking in the subject by asking a few basic questions on the topic and make a judgement of the student's understanding on the topic and then proceed forward.
