As a tutor of student athletes at Indiana University, I tutored students from all walks of life. I began by tutoring Biology and Spanish but the need for tutors in English, Writing, Chemistry and Statistics soon arose and I stepped up to fill those positions. Using previous knowledge from AP classes in high school, as well as recent knowledge gained from my classes, I was able to successfully convey new information in easy to understand and applicable terms to these students. I graduated high school in the International Baccalaureate program with a 4.5 gpa and 30 college credits. I then went on to the University of Colorado starting out as a sophomore. I graduated 3 years later with a degree in Integrative Physiology. I have an extensive background in science and math. While at CU I was able to tutor children through a program called Reading Buddies where I would meet every week with them every week and read to them in English. I started by tutoring introduction to chemistry- college level at the University of Texas - El Paso where I attended. This was a part time student job that made me consider teaching. I then tutored chemistry, physics, and mathematics at a nearby high school. This was the preparation for the state exam (Texas) called TAKS. I was responsible for teaching and supervising the laboratory portion of the high school Chemistry advanced placement class. In the evenings, I was also responsible for the two hour study hall sessions held with the entire class. This involved re-lecturing some concepts and also answering questions with students one-on-one. Many facets only because I was trying to decide what I wanted to go graduate school for only to decide not to go once I was accepted. I have gained experience in the biotech industry working with RNA, in the newborn screening laboratory for the state health department working with recessive diseases. I am now a clinical reagent application specialist for Waters Corporation.
Depending on the age of child but especially thinking of biology and chemistry classes I think it is valuable to teach the person how to create different activities with the subject matter to learn the material.
