A Little Bit About Me...

When I was in school, I could always understand or figure out what the teacher was trying to get across. Some students, however, didn’t always understand what was being explained. I was the kid who would rephrase the teacher’s remarks and explain it again in a way that the other students could understand. Not all students understand things in the same way. I try to find a way to explain things so the material is more interesting and less frustrating than it is when the teacher explains it. I love the “ah-hah moments” when you realize the student just got it. I am easy going; and kids have an easy time talking with me.

My most recent professional degree is an MFA in Creative Writing. I taught Composition Writing as an adjunct instructor for 2 years. I work as a roving substitute teacher for the Sioux Falls School district, having taught various subjects from early-childhood to High School mathematics. I teach as an online writing instructor. My main subject of expertise is in writing and English Literature as I received a BS in English while tutoring college students for the University Writing Center for 3 years. I also taught ESL to Korean High School students for 1 year overseas. I also have experience tutoring student athletes and helping them develop strong study habits. I spent a year overseas right out of high school tutoring my cousins. Later, after college, I volunteered to teach Spanish at a "homeschool" in Oregon for 3 months, then spent 6 months teaching Spanish then guitar at Lane Community College. I was assistant teacher for 2 years at a Christian preschool in Kennewick, WA. I have taught private lessons for 4 or 5 years altogether in the various places I have lived, teaching piano, guitar, voice and Spanish. Once I even taught English as a second language for a while. I enjoyed teaching basic music theory and how to play piano by ear to a blind student once. He made me proud at the recital.
