A Little Bit About Me...

I've worked with children, adolescents, and adult learners. I've worked in one-on-one settings in a writing center lab and have lectured to a classroom on a college campus and in an on-line setting. I, having taken several teaching practicums and pedagogy classes, work to constantly improve and revise my teaching methods. I try to create a balance between learner-centered theory and teacher-centered. My biggest strengths as a teacher include my compassion for my students as fellow learners and my ability to adapt to any student population as I have worked with countless ESL students from all over the world including Ethiopia, Iraq, China, Japan, Taiwan etc., university students, and public school children of all ages.

When I was in school, I could always understand or figure out what the teacher was trying to get across. Some students, however, didn’t always understand what was being explained. I was the kid who would rephrase the teacher’s remarks and explain it again in a way that the other students could understand. Not all students understand things in the same way. I try to find a way to explain things so the material is more interesting and less frustrating than it is when the teacher explains it. I love the “ah-hah moments” when you realize the student just got it. I am easy going; and kids have an easy time talking with me.

I like to tailor my curriculum to fit the particular student that I am working with. Each child learns differently and has different goals and motivations, as well as different strengths and weaknesses. Those who know me well say I have great patience. I was also raised around different cultures and languages, so I understand people and children in multicultural and multilingual situations well.
I spent a year overseas right out of high school tutoring my cousins. Later, after college, I volunteered to teach Spanish at a "homeschool" in Oregon for 3 months, then spent 6 months teaching Spanish then guitar at Lane Community College.
