I have always sought to lead rather than force something upon the student by rote. Most important is to present the information in a way that is both interesting and memorable. It is my experience that people remember things better when they truly understand the process, and have reason to listen to the explanation. My experience in tutoring began in high school when I volunteered for my local library, in a program aimed towards improving students’ reading ability. Having had considerable difficulty learning to read myself, I felt it was important that I attempt to pass this on to others. When I entered Knox College I was focusing on English, and ended up helping my fellow students with writing and editing their papers.

My favorite English teacher in college affected me because he focused on my individual strengths and interests, instead of giving cookie cutter instruction. I have three years professional working experience for several multinational companies, which has helped me understand the importance of great communication and math skills in business. I encourage a relaxed and friendly atmosphere where the student and I can work together to create goals and then decide on the best ways to achieve these goals, including discussing which learning style works best for the student. I encourage students to learn by doing and by thinking. So, rather than give the student a list of rules to memorize, I prefer to give an example of a rule and then have the student interpret the example and implement it in a new situation, afterward reflecting on what they did to see how it helped (or did not help) them learn. Most of all, I love watching the students grow from what they have learned and challenging them to meet (and make) their goals.
