"Half of knowledge is knowing where to find it."

After completing my undergraduate degree in English Literature at Florida State University, I worked as a substitute teacher in Hillsborough County for two years. In 2009, I completed my Master's Degree in Communication at University of South Florida while simultaneously employed at the Department of Special Education. I have been tutoring with Advanced Learners for 1 year and am currently an Adjunct Instructor of Public Speaking at HCC Dale Mabry.
Once while subbing, I entered a classroom where the students had been allowed to watch Jerry Springer on TV for the last two weeks. I couldn't let this continue, but I saw how emotional the class was about the show. I encouraged them to write their own talk show and told them we would perform it the next day. I find that connecting student's interest with the subject matter to be learned is the best way to teach.

My comments on tutoring Chess : I know the basic moves and strategies.

My style is student centered. I always try to provide a positive atmosphere for learning. My jokes were a technique to help accomplish that goal. As a GED teacher I always began with a pretest and documented student progress to correct any deficiencies. I believe in positive reinforcement and helping students achieve their goals which gives us both a sense of accomplishment.
I am an honors graduate of U.S.F. with forty years of teaching experience. In addition to my B.A. and M.A. degrees, I completed all cousework for the ED.D. I have taught FCAT preperation in middle school in math and reading. I have also taught GED Prep in the evenings. I taught junior high math one year. I have also written two books. One is a history jokebook. The other is a memoir of humorous classroom incidents. I believe that these experiences qualify me to tutor social studies, reading, and math.

Over the course of my studies in Mechanical Engineering I learned the value of perseverance. My classes were extrememly difficult, but I did not give up. I had numerous obstacles to overcome in order to achieve my degree, but I finally did so in May of this year. Knowing that I have a B.S.M.E. and I passed my E.I.T. on the first try gives me a lot of pride in my work. Throughout my years in college and since I have graduated I have tutored several friends in calculus 1, 2,and 3; statistics and differential equations. I also tutored in advanced math for 6th, 7th, and 8th grade.
I believe that the easiest way for a child to learn is whatever method is easiest for that child. Not all students learn the same way. A great teacher takes the time to understand, through evaluation and listening, which teaching method each student needs for maximum success. I can see the potential i ... read more

As a parent of 4 and an educator in Pasco County, I have learned that a student will develop according to expectation and ability. Assessing abilities will allow for appropriate expectations. Educating with excellence to all learners shows compassion, skill and patience. Working with both elementary and high school students has allowed me to understand the learning process for a diversity of learners at varying stages of development.
Teaching and learning means student and teacher have a relationship with each other. I can show a student their strengths and allow weaknesses to surface during the learning process. Without condemnation, a student will excel. I love working with students of all ages because when that lightbulb goes off no matter the age, we all benefit, and this is the greatest thing~~

A Little Bit About Me...

I love teaching all age groups of children. I know that every child is capable of not only learning a subject, but being successful at understanding and applying the subject material. I use a hands on approach, looking to see what strengths and opportunities a child has to offer and working to improve the child’s ability to learn the subject. I believe that children respond better to learning when they realize someone cares about not only them, but what they think. When a child is able to recognize that you value them and their opinion, it opens up a whole new door of learning for them

I really love teaching. I also think that anybody can grasp any concept in any subject as long as they are subject to a good teacher that knows how to get down to the student's level. This helps the teacher to realize that the student doesn't know everything that the teacher knows, and therefore, has to realize that he has to break down the material in simple, approachable sections so that the average student can comprehend it easily.

A Little Bit About Me...

Having taught for the past 15 years has enabled me to hone my teaching style, which is mainly an instructor-centered approach. I believe students need to have a focus to be successful learners. It is the teacher who guides the student to have a focus. To focus a student to a particular task, skill, or strategy the teacher needs to fully explain the task, skill, or strategy. Students don’t retain much information when they are told; they need scaffolds and supports to process information. As teachers we need to...” ask ourselves whether we are explaining or telling.” Students need to be aware of the thinking process of the teacher whom demonstrates and models what is expected (skills and processes) and then acts as a coach or guide to assist the students in applying the knowledge. This style encourages student participation and utilizes various learning styles

My approach is adapted to the needs of the student. People learn in many different ways. I encourage the student to communicate freely with me. A relaxed and comfortable student will assimilate information readily and I will be able to communicate effectively. My goal is to equip a student with the confidence and ability to approach any subject. The common regurgitation of memorized information has little bearing on the applicable understanding of the subject.
