"Half of knowledge is knowing where to find it."

After completing my undergraduate degree in English Literature at Florida State University, I worked as a substitute teacher in Hillsborough County for two years. In 2009, I completed my Master's Degree in Communication at University of South Florida while simultaneously employed at the Department of Special Education. I have been tutoring with Advanced Learners for 1 year and am currently an Adjunct Instructor of Public Speaking at HCC Dale Mabry.
Once while subbing, I entered a classroom where the students had been allowed to watch Jerry Springer on TV for the last two weeks. I couldn't let this continue, but I saw how emotional the class was about the show. I encouraged them to write their own talk show and told them we would perform it the next day. I find that connecting student's interest with the subject matter to be learned is the best way to teach.

My comments on tutoring Chess : I know the basic moves and strategies.

My style is student centered. I always try to provide a positive atmosphere for learning. My jokes were a technique to help accomplish that goal. As a GED teacher I always began with a pretest and documented student progress to correct any deficiencies. I believe in positive reinforcement and helping students achieve their goals which gives us both a sense of accomplishment.
I am an honors graduate of U.S.F. with forty years of teaching experience. In addition to my B.A. and M.A. degrees, I completed all cousework for the ED.D. I have taught FCAT preperation in middle school in math and reading. I have also taught GED Prep in the evenings. I taught junior high math one year. I have also written two books. One is a history jokebook. The other is a memoir of humorous classroom incidents. I believe that these experiences qualify me to tutor social studies, reading, and math.

More About This Tutor...

After finishing my first degree at the University of Florida, I moved to the South Pacific to work and travel New Zealand and Australia. Upon my return, I began work as a ski instructor, which included many of the same responsibilities as a classroom teacher or tutor. I was educating children to learn a skill that required patience, professionalism, and the ability to explain the same thing in a variety of ways. When the snow melted, I moved to Vermont and worked as a crew leader for a conservation corps. I led groups of young people for 5 week adventures to do conservation work and live in remote wilderness areas. My position also required me to daily facilitate and lead discussions regarding environmental education. I have years of experience working with children as a camp counselor and I have participated in a mentoring program to tutor troubled youth while attending UF. Most recentl ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

My career as an attorney has afforded me many opportunities to instruct people from various educational backgrounds on many complicated subjects that have affected their lives. I am extremely patient and model my instructional method to fit the cognitive mindset of the person I am teaching. Having taken bar examinations in three states, I can teach your child to take tests to the best of their ability, and to use the preparation methods to develop skills that will cross over into other subjects and other aspects of their lives. My methodology is to provide students with the personal guidance they need in order to get back on track to reach their goals.

I spent 7 years as a college professor, middle school Spanish, and one year as program director of the criminal justice and paralegal studies at a 'for-profit' institution. I spent most of my working career teaching young people in very diverse environments and people of many cultures. I spent 3 years as a detective investigating juvenile crime and part of the investigation was the rehabilitation involved rather than the prosecution of those cases. I believe I understand young people considering that I have five children of my own. I believe that the combination of my education and diverse background in the work force, I can be an asset to your company. I have strong communication skills, powerpoint presentations, and writing skills.

I love teaching all age groups of children. I know that every child is capable of not only learning a subject, but being successful at understanding and applying the subject material. I use a hands on approach, looking to see what strengths and opportunities a child has to offer and working to improve the child’s ability to learn the subject. I believe that children respond better to learning when they realize someone cares about not only them, but what they think. When a child is able to recognize that you value them and their opinion, it opens up a whole new door of learning for them

My goal is to make certain that I know each child's own particular learning style and use the tools to make him or her successful. I use a variety of strategies, especially in writing, to make certain that students know how to write successfully. I use several graphic organizers for teaching the writing process and work with students until they find one that is a good fit for their learning style. I also believe in incorporating technology to help them become better writers through the use of online materials as well. My approach is adapted to the needs of the student. People learn in many different ways. I encourage the student to communicate freely with me. A relaxed and comfortable student will assimilate information readily and I will be able to communicate effectively. My goal is to equip a student with the confidence and ability to approach any subject. The common regurgitation of memorized information has little bearing on the applicable understanding of the subject.

I like the teaching and learning process alike. I love the feeling when a student suddenly gets the concept. I enjoy the process of teaching just as the final result. Motivating students to learn and watching them grow as they do is very enthralling to me. I have always been an excellent Math student and I strive to learn teaching skills in my discipline. I offer enthusiasm for a subject, because of the experiences I have had in my own education. I bring practical applications to the class as much as possible so that children understand why they need to learn the concepts. I think each student learn differently and teachers should be able to find it by being patient and observant. My goal is to help yout child excel in the subject while having fun doing it.
