I am a recent graduate of Mercyhurst College in Erie, Pennsylvania (May 2011). I have a Bachelor of Arts degree in English with a concentration in creative writing. I also have a minor in photography. During my time at Mercyhurst College, I worked as a writing tutor in the school’s writing center. When students entered the center, it was my job to immediately make them feel comfortable by greeting them with a friendly smile and asking what I could help them with. It is not enough to be able to just decode words, you have to know what the message is that the passage or story is trying to convey. To that end, I stop during reading to periodically check to see if they can summarize the events, the mood or the feelings of the characters,predict what may happen next. When answering comprehension questions on paper, I insist they answer in complete sentences and give multiple word answers.
