My experience in tutoring began in high school when I volunteered for my local library, in a program aimed towards improving students’ reading ability. Having had considerable difficulty learning to read myself, I felt it was important that I attempt to pass this on to others. When I entered Knox College I was focusing on English, and ended up helping my fellow students with writing and editing their papers.
I have always sought to lead rather than force something upon the student by rote. Most important is to present the information in a way that is both interesting and memorable. It is my experience that people remember things better when they truly understand the process, and have reason to listen to the explanation.

I am first and foremost a teacher/learning facilitator, and secondly a computer lover. As a teacher I am sequential in learning points, and creative in presentation. I am good at finding first the 'starting point' enabling the student to better relate to the lesson. I can usually discover a reason for 'why learn this' for the unmotivated student. The one thing that I learned from my four years teaching religious studies to first graders is that patience is the key to learning. Every child is different and in a classroom setting, you can see the difference in reading and writing levels. I enjoyed the challenge that these unique situations arose. I believe that reading and writing are two of the most important skills a child can master for the development of their minds.
