Prior to attending school at SUNY Old Westbury, I had already taught religious studies to first graders during my time at high school. There I had to help students with their reading and writing, as well as keep a calm and composed classroom setting. While attending SUNY Old Westbury I worked in the writing center tutoring students at all levels. My main job was to proof read essays and help with the organization and pointing out minor to major grammatical errors. I find that students (myself included) learn best when they feel safe and that they can be successful. I believe it's important to teach in the zone of proximal development and build on a student's interests. The best way to do this is begin with activities that are fun and if it's possible, to access the creative side of the brain during learning to help students to relax.

My teaching style depends on the student. Some students need me to explain the subject material to them rather than read it from the book, while other students benefit most if they work through a problem and then ask me a question when they get stuck. Though regardless of the student, I always ask questions as we go, because I know that students learn best when they engage with the material.
I graduated this spring with honors from Carleton College. For my senior thesis in Math, three of my colleagues and I designed a Challenge Math curriculum for fifth grade students. Together we compiled our lessons into a book, and once a week each we taught a small group of students.
