Hey there! I'm a native italian speaker and I currently live in Italy. I will be in Boulder for the month of August and would love to help you with your italian.. perfect pronunciation guaranteed! I have taught italian to foreigners in my beautiful city, which is Florence, Tuscany, and I am studying to become a former teacher in Italian as a Second Language. Also, I have studied French and french literature+culture for a long time and lived in Paris to deepen the knowledge of the language. In 1975 I had been teaching tennis for the City of Boulder Parks and Recreation Department for a year and elected to attend a teaching clinic at Coto de Caza California conducted by the Vic Braden Tennis College. Since then I worked for the City of Boulder as a tennis instructor for 7 more years and I coached tennis to individual tennis players, mostly promising junior players, for an additional 4 years. After a short period of retirement from tennis, I took a job with the Bureau of Prisons in Englewood, Colorado, as a tutor in their Education Department. In that capacity I tutored adult inmates to achieve their 8th grade equivalency and I convinced several to go beyond that level to reach their GED. Working with inmates was a very rewarding experience. I also taught for Flatirons Country Club for a season in 1993, and for Devil's Thumb Tennis Club the following year.

I love teaching children and opening them to the fun and interest of learning a language. I break down the lessons into chunks that build on one another, making certain that the student(s) acquire a solid base. I am encouraging and respectful, as well as friendly and on their side. I have taught students of many nationalities and abilities, and I am attuned to discovering individual difficulties and solutions to these obstacles in learning.
I am fluent in six languages: French, Russian, Spanish, Italian, German, and English. I attended local schools and lived in those countries as a child, as well as worked overseas for seventeen years. My degrees are a BA in Comparative World Literature and an MA in Russian Literature and Linguistics. I love to teach and work with children, especially the ones who have difficulties to learn. It is a challenge, as we must constantly try new learning methods and catch their attention. I like my courses to be very interactive with a strong participation of the students. I like to use concrete situations (news, books,...) as a pretext to introduce and illustrate the theory. I also like to use the diversity and specificities of everyone to build a discussion and introduce concepts which are related to the course.
Between 16-22 years old, I was leader of a Scouts troop and organizer of holiday camps for children of ages 3-18. I obtained the Belgian certification needed to be in charge of children day-care centers and holiday camps. I also gave the training needed to obtain this certification. After my studies, I did 60 hours of teaching (economics courses) to obtain my teaching cer ... read more

One of the most interesting things about math, in my opinion, is how everyone can have different understandings of fundamentally similar concepts. One method may work for Student A but not Student B, so I aspire to teach methods that will reach both students. I engage and interact with my students a lot in order to properly gauge how my students are progressing and what I can do to further help them. Also, I like using 'real world' examples to reinforce a concept and show its practicality in everyday life, but I do not like to introduce concepts through such examples, because often students are not able to generalize enough from the examples to truly understand the concept. My goal as a teacher is to make sure that my students have received a full understanding of and confidence in the material.

I teach with passion and enjoyment, which has always proved conducive to the learning process. I, myself, have always enjoyed being a student, and realized what qualities in teachers I found most effective. Patience, competency, articulation and good-natured humor go a very long way in education and I believe I possess those traits. I have worked with mainstream students, Special Education students, and Deaf students in a variety of educator roles from straight tutoring to camp counseling. Through these experiences, I have realized that a teacher must have flexibility and creativity in how they present information, as everyone has a different learning style. The responsibility lies with the educator to find that style and help the student reach his/her highest potential, and I feel confident in my ability to do so.
In all my endeavors I strive for variety. My collegiate caree ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I recently graduated from the University of Colorado with two bachelor's degrees in elementary education and psychology. Throughout my studies at CU I taught at several different (and diverse) elementary scools in the front range area. I've taught second through fifth grades. I first started tutoring middle school students when I was in high school, and my tutoring continued throughout college. I was given an award of excellence on the Praxis II exam (required for teacher licensure). My writing skills and ability to differentiate instruction are some of my stronger skills due to extensive practice and refining throughout college.
I am a passionate teacher willing to devote my time and abilities to the success of my students. I believe that a teacher's ability to personally tailor instruction to his/her students is imperative to the student's success. Differentiation and clas ... read more

I love meeting and interacting with new people, children and adults alike. I have extreme patience. I believe that it is imperative to make the student feel comfortable in the learning environment. I would never embarrass a student for asking a question. So many times in the past, I have witnessed teachers ridiculing students for asking a question because they genuinely did not understand the subject matter, which prevented the students from asking any more questions in class. It is also important to know why the student, or his or her parents, believes that he or she needs a tutor.

I love to see a student light up when he realizes for the first time that he is capable of achieving success in an area that he has previously experienced failure. I understand that each person has his own way of learning and I am sensitive to those who need special attention or non-traditional forms of learning. My goal is to provide each student with the tools and knowledge to learn on their own. Incorporating basic study skills into a lesson is key to watching a student become an independent and lifetime learner. I believe that learning is fun and hopefully my enthusiasm and love for learning can help spark a similar love in my student.

My teaching style is patient and caring, while being consistent with expectations. I believe the role of a teacher is to facilitate learning. Differentiating for students according to their individual needs and learning styles is at the forefront of my teaching. I believe in combining academic support with manipulatives and physical exercises, i.e. Brain Gym activities. A Little Bit About Me...

My goal is to excite students about learning. I encourage my own children as well as those I teach in the classroom to focus first on finding at least one concept in each lesson that attracts them and about which they would like to know more. This philosophy helps to eliminate the student's perception that "I hate math" or "I'm not good at science." Secondly, I use text-to-self and text-to-world relationships to get students to recognize the broader application of subjects. Finally, I work hard to reach students with various learning styles (verbal, auditory, visual) and always make time for one-on-one reinforcement or re-teaching for students with special needs.

I have worked with students who are very bright, and just wanted to score a little higher on their boards, and students who had trouble passing their courses before they came to me for help. Whether I assist the student to get a "C" in their math course, or an 800 on the SAT math section, I have always enjoyed working with children. I know the material, and I have the patience to explain and make sure the student understands.
As an ivy league graduate, I have attained a top-notch education and had access to the best professors in the world. Through my major I have studied mathematics, including Algebra, Geometry, Algebra II, Calculus, and Statistics. I have tutored high school students for several years in their homes, mostly for SAT prep and Algebra. My SAT I scores were 710M and 710V.
