I have found through my 6 years of teaching students, that flexibility is a key component. Explaining a difficult concept to a student should be customized to each individual students' needs. Tutoring is fundamentally different than lecturing because one interacts with one students. Therefore a tutor must adopt a style that most effectively communicates with the student. It is important to understand why the student is having difficulty mastering the subject. Most often I use an interlocution with the student. As the graduate of a difficult field of science, I spent a great deal of time studying and developing better methods for studying. I have become very knowledgeable in science and applied science through my degree field. I have also spent much time reading and writing scientific articles, which has made me proficient in English, general literacy, and writing. I believe the most effective way to learn is through self discovery of the concepts. This should be done in a very positive environment in which the student is encouraged and motivated to fully understand the material. I don't believe in memorization, but understanding.
I have always loved helping others. In college I tutored 2 seperate high school students in chemistry and one in algebra, for a total of about 2 yrs experience. Teaching children takes patience and creativity. Each child is different in their attention span and interests. Making each subject important and interesting is one place to start. It is crucial to never let a child give up, and not to give up on them yourself. My goal in teaching is to determine which way the child learns, for example a visual learning may need to draw out spelling words, where an audible learner needs to recite them. I love to find new ways to relate what they are learning with life outside of school and in this way show them how important the subject is. Teaching style varies with the subject. For math, I derive how to arrive at the answer without memorizing a process. Once the student has grasped a concept, I provide examples of varying 'difficulty' to show how to use the concept (the student should be able to apply it regardless of the problem’s complexity). With respect to science, visuals are key. Biology can be taught using models/diagrams representing various systems. Chemistry, though, requires a more hands-on approach. Teachers should guide students to the answers, allowing students to learn the most by creating their own diagrams/models. I love helping people. I believe that no one is stupid just some people are better in some areas than other people.
