Organic Chemistry is one of my top subjects!

I've studied both engineering and biochemistry in pursuing my degree (biochemistry). My experience and knowledge in chemistry, organic chemistry, biochemistry, and molecular genetics was adequate enough for A's in all of these classes. A Little Bit About Me...

I have always loved helping others. In college I tutored 2 seperate high school students in chemistry and one in algebra, for a total of about 2 yrs experience. In college I also participated in "Students teaching AIDS to Students". I volunteered at a preschool in Costa Rica where I taught sanitation and health. I have traveled to Africa multiple times to volunteer and conduct research. I am very experienced in the fields of science and math and love passing this knowledge on to others. I plan on using my PhD to educate students in Africa about health and science
I believe the most effective way to learn is through self discovery of the concepts. This should be done in a very positive environment in which the student is encouraged and motivated to fully understand the material. I don't believe in memorization, but understanding.

A Little Bit About Me...

My degrees have taken me places that I never thought they would. I was excited to teach English in a school in Costa Rica for one year. There I was able to learn Spanish quickly as well as help elementary school children learn English. I taught grammar as well as science. I also tutored on the side in all subjects. Previous to this experience I tutored a fourth grader in geography, history, and spelling. In college I used many skills that helped me to prepare for teaching. A Little Bit About Me...

Teaching style varies with the subject. For math, I derive how to arrive at the answer without memorizing a process. Once the student has grasped a concept, I provide examples of varying 'difficulty' to show how to use the concept (the student should be able to apply it regardless of the problem’s complexity). With respect to science, visuals are key. Biology can be taught using models/diagrams representing various systems. Chemistry, though, requires a more hands-on approach. Teachers should guide students to the answers, allowing students to learn the most by creating their own diagrams/models. Every student learns differently, so it is necessary to discover how each student learns. Consequently, I tweak my style to suit his/her needs.

A Little Bit About Me...

I love helping people. I believe that no one is stupid just some people are better in some areas than other people. I enjoy helping people learn because I love seeing the "light bulb click on above their head" when they finally grasp a concept. I try to simplify the subject (or put it in terms the student will grasp) so the student will understand it, thus my teaching method depends on how the student learns.
I worked as a tutor all through college at Iowa State University. I tutored Math (up through Trig), general and organic chemistry, and statistics 101.
