I am very adaptable and can either teach in a very structured format, or focus on a students specific area of need. The first teaching session focuses on the students needs, preferences and proffered teaching / study methods. I can use this information to tailor my teaching to your specific needs.
I hold an honor's degree in marine biology and a masters degree in marine renewable energy. I have a strong scientific background performing environmental studies and development of marine tidal energy developments. I have previously privately tutored young adults from 12-18 years old. In all my endeavors I strive for variety. My collegiate career at UC Berkeley involved strong academics, competitive athletics and International Study Abroad experiences. My degree in Natural Resources focused heavily on science, specifically ecology, and multiple-use resource management with strong math and social science components. I complimented my core studies with classes on environmental literature and art which helped develop critical reading and writing skills. I love meeting and interacting with new people, children and adults alike. I have extreme patience. I believe that it is imperative to make the student feel comfortable in the learning environment. I would never embarrass a student for asking a question. So many times in the past, I have witnessed teachers ridiculing students for asking a question because they genuinely did not understand the subject matter, which prevented the students from asking any more questions in class. It is also important to know why the student, or his or her parents, believes that he or she needs a tutor.

A Little Bit About Me...

My educational philosophy is strongly influenced by Howard Gardner's Theory of Multiple Intelligences. I approach teaching from that perspective, incorporating a variety of disciplines and media to build on a student's strengths, to have fun while learning, and to challenge areas (building new skills) where a student can benefit. I volunteered at Howard Gardner's Project Zero at Harvard to understand how to evaluate learning through qualitative and quantitative measurements.
