Tutor with 13 years experience

I'm an environmental engineer who has been tutoring for the last 13 years. I enjoy working with children and excell at working with children who might be struggling with comprehension or who have learning disabilities. I have experience working with children who are ESL or ELL. I have worked with elementary, secondary and high school students.
Make learning fun and everyone wins! Not all children absorb material the same way. I try to explore different ways of presenting material and working through concepts to relate the material to something that can be understood.

A Little Bit About Me...

I believe that each student is different, and that the best teaching method differs with each student. Some students respond better to being challenged while others will require smaller steps. The goals of the students also vary, some needing only to pass while others need a solid foundation in anticipation of further study. I believe I can tailor instruction to the students' needs.
I graduated from the United States Air Force Academy with a degree in Aeronautical Engineering. Math classes included Calculus I, II, and III, Differential Equations and Matrices, and Engineering Math. My MS in Engineering Management included several classes in Statistics and Probabilities. I tutored middle school students 12 hours per week for two years at Ramstein Middle School, Ramstein Air Base, Germany.

A Little Bit About Me...

I have been an "instructor"-teacher for over 15 years. I teach math, economics, finance, business, and management for several colleges. I have been a Boy Scoutmaster and merit bade counselor and have worked with youth for over 15 years. I have always been given very high marks as an instructor with many comments on my positive energy and help for students. I have an applied mathematics minor so I would be able to teach algebra, geometry, trig, and introductory calculus.
I am a question-answer type of teacher. I like to demonstrate, have them do, answer questions, clear up ambiguities, and then test or at least check to insure learning and understanding. I have a style of quiet, but firm expectations. I have a great amount of patience. I will do best with high school and college age students, and on occasion, with more mature middle school students.

I am very patient with students of all ages and have an ability to get them to grasp fundamental concepts. My tutoring style is one of getting students to think critically and creatively and to see the fundamental patterns for successful problem solving. I do not just give students the answer to questions or a slick heuristic method for solving a particular problem. Rather I try to get them to think for themselves so that they will be able to solve problems of a wide variety on their own. I also like to teach students how to see a "picture" of the problem at hand and various ways of graphically representing a problem, and that there are usually several different approaches to solving the same problem. I also stress the need to have learned necessary background information so that they are not always starting a solution from scratch. Most of all, I want students to see the beauty of ... read more

I began as an English major then graduated in Physics with honors, cutting edge research experience in both academia and industry, as a published writer, photojournalist and poet. As a result, I can understand why some very intelligent people who perform well with the arts can sometimes be frustrated by the math and sciences, and vice versa. I have previous experience as a private tutor and trainer in industry settings. I have researched alternative energy and biomedical devices so I can answer the question “Will I ever use this?” by citing real world examples. I teach physics, multiple forms of math and writing. I enjoy watching a student’s face light up with that “Now I get it!” expression.
My style is patient, respectful, fair and adaptive. The goal is to find what works well for the student, not take a rigid one-size-fits-all approach that a classroom may employ. I start loo ... read more

When I came to the U.S. I was very happy to get the opportunity to improve my English as well as follow my passion in researching environmental problems. I learned in multiple classes and my research group how important team work is in accelerating knowledge, solve problems, and share what I learned with other people. As a undergraduate student I had the opportunity to tutor multiple High-school students in Chemistry and Math.
I am patient and love to work with children. I believe that every child has a natural drive to seek knowledge. However, classes at school are often too big to allow for different approaches to teaching.

As a mechanical engineer I have been doing applied calculus and physics since I started school. As an undergraduate I was a peer mentor to the freshman engineers. We taught the students to juggle both figuratively and literally. It was especially rewarding because I had been in their situation only a few years before. On my breaks from school I often tutored my best friends little brother in Algebra. I can honestly say that I taught him a semester worth of algebra (twice) in only a few days. I also mentored undergraduates while working for the NSF funded Center for High-Rate Nanomanufacturing. I helped them research specific projects during their time (over the summer) working with us.
I love to teach people. However, I prefer to teach older students, such as high school and college kids, especially in math because they are often actually interested in the subject as appose ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

In 1975 I had been teaching tennis for the City of Boulder Parks and Recreation Department for a year and elected to attend a teaching clinic at Coto de Caza California conducted by the Vic Braden Tennis College. Since then I worked for the City of Boulder as a tennis instructor for 7 more years and I coached tennis to individual tennis players, mostly promising junior players, for an additional 4 years. After a short period of retirement from tennis, I took a job with the Bureau of Prisons in Englewood, Colorado, as a tutor in their Education Department. In that capacity I tutored adult inmates to achieve their 8th grade equivalency and I convinced several to go beyond that level to reach their GED. Working with inmates was a very rewarding experience. I also taught for Flatirons Country Club for a season in 1993, and for Devil's Thumb Tennis Club the following year.

I believe that given the appropriate instruction in the basics, any child can excell in any field. It is the job of the educator to insure that the mastery of the basics is accomplished before pushing the student further. This is true in academics as well as sports or any other field of endevor. I have always insisted that students in mathematics show the appropriate steps on paper as to how they arrived at their solutions. There are times for group discovery but math becomes an individual pursuit and therefore sometimes requires an individual level of instruction.
I graduated from Fort Hays with a BS in Mathematics and taught for two years in Topeka, Kansas. I then returned to Fort Hays for additional classes and earned a MS in Secondary School Administration. Upon moving to the Denver area I originally taught in the Adams County District 50 Schools for one year. I taught in the J ... read more

I practice a collaborative style, one where I team with the student to achieve one or more goals. I push the student to seek the answers, helping them find the resources that are most useful. I enjoy all age levels, but trend toward middle, upper, and college levels.
I have been helping students for several years, primarily in the areas of math, accounting and other business topics. I also have experience with helping people use their computers more effectively, especially with regard to Microsoft products.

A Little Bit About Me...

I graduated Cum Laude from University of Rochester with a BS in Physics and a BA in Mathematics. While an undergraduate at UR, I earned five semesters of teaching experience through the Teaching Internship program with the Physics Department. As a teaching intern I learned to master various teaching techniques, and I implemented them by leading workshops and laboratory sessions for undergraduate students. I also worked as a math Teaching Assistant for a Transition To Advanced Mathematics course where I held office hours and led class discussions. As a result of my success and high ratings as a teaching intern, I was most recently employed as a non-matriculated Teaching Assistant for a physics course at Texas A&M University.

As both a nationally certified rehabilitation counselor and a former teacher, I have a unique perspective with regard to the tutoring process. Similar to counseling, the ultimate goal of tutoring is to facilitates students' understanding of their learning style and to ultimately increase autonomy and self-sufficiency. This philosophy differs from others in that the goal of tutoring is not simply to help the child learn academic material and complete assignments; rather, tutoring serves as a means to gain a more comprehensive understanding of the self and how idiosyncrasies influence individuals' unique learning styles. My experience in both teaching and counseling has imbued a deep understanding of the importance of individual differences and its influence on the learning process. As a rehabilitation counselor, my expertise lie in my work with individuals with disabilities, particularl ... read more

More About This Tutor...

I graduated this spring with honors from Carleton College. For my senior thesis in Math, three of my colleagues and I designed a Challenge Math curriculum for fifth grade students. Together we compiled our lessons into a book, and once a week each we taught a small group of students. When I moved to Boulder this summer, I began tutoring CU students, adults taking online courses, and high school students. I also have experience tutoring for the SAT, ACT, and GRE.
My teaching style depends on the student. Some students need me to explain the subject material to them rather than read it from the book, while other students benefit most if they work through a problem and then ask me a question when they get stuck. Though regardless of the student, I always ask questions as we go, because I know that students learn best when they engage with the material.

One of the most interesting things about math, in my opinion, is how everyone can have different understandings of fundamentally similar concepts. One method may work for Student A but not Student B, so I aspire to teach methods that will reach both students. I engage and interact with my students a lot in order to properly gauge how my students are progressing and what I can do to further help them. Also, I like using 'real world' examples to reinforce a concept and show its practicality in everyday life, but I do not like to introduce concepts through such examples, because often students are not able to generalize enough from the examples to truly understand the concept. My goal as a teacher is to make sure that my students have received a full understanding of and confidence in the material.
