For "Writing Research Papers" I would start with an excellent published paper and then I would review the student's work with explanation. For "U. S. Government" I would incorporate the skill of outlining and review the student's outlines until the important material was included and learned For "Statistics" there is nothing like doing problems. I would start with an explanation of the chapter's subject matter and work with the student in doing problems and discussing the method and meaning.

I have been an "instructor"-teacher for over 15 years. I teach math, economics, finance, business, and management for several colleges. I have been a Boy Scoutmaster and merit bade counselor and have worked with youth for over 15 years. I have always been given very high marks as an instructor with many comments on my positive energy and help for students. I have an applied mathematics minor so I would be able to teach algebra, geometry, trig, and introductory calculus.
I am a question-answer type of teacher. I like to demonstrate, have them do, answer questions, clear up ambiguities, and then test or at least check to insure learning and understanding. I have earned the BA, MA, and PhD degrees in mathematics and have held half-time college mathematics teaching positions at UC Berkeley and UC Santa Barbara while a graduate student, and full-time tenure -track college teaching positions in mathematics at Cornell College of Iowa (2 years), Univ. of Hawaii (2 years), Penn State Univ. at McKeesport (15 years), and San Jose Community College (16 years). I've recently tutored math and general science for UpwardBound, a program designed to inspire and give the tools necessary to under-privileged high school students to become first generation college students. Throughout my study of math and physics, I've found that most people that are unable to do these subjects are limited by their own phobias and that if they are simply explained in the right way anyone can feel comfortable with frightening subjects such as math and physics.
