I'm a math minor at the University of Montana, and I've been tutoring at the Math Learning Center there since I was a freshman. I have experience tutoring with all of the classes listed, and I learned a lot of them from different institutions so I can help give a new way of thinking about the subject.
I try to teach conversationally and help students get comfortable with the process of doing the problems over just giving the answers. The professors who most impressed me were extremely challenging. One exceptional professor jumps out at me. Her passion for teaching was inarguable and her skill was remarkable. She was witty and smart. I remember sitting on the edge of my seat, clenched tight, simultaneously intrigued and terrified. Story, metaphor and an understanding of the student having “the idea before the subject being taught” are vital. For me, the underlying concepts are of vital importance before true learning can occur. Knowing what a “mammal” is comes before knowing how we classify “mammals”.
