My comments on tutoring Florida Writes : Taught state test writing preparation for many years in Massachusetts public alternative schools. Tutor extensively to prepare students for state and college exams.

I believe that all students can and will achieve academic success given appropriate instruction; i.e., instruction that is differentiated according to students' specific needs, learning styles, interests, and personal goals. As a classroom teacher and as a personal tutor, I have seen almost miraculous results in a relatively short period of time, both in terms of academic achievement and student confidence. Passion and enthusiasm for learning is contagious, and I am a carrier. For a dedicated instructor, nothing is more satisfying than watching a student "catch" the learning bug.
After attending (and teaching in) a graduate program in American/British Literature and Language at L.S.U., I realized that my true calling was teaching. I began teaching English, Journalism, S.A.T. Prep., Latin, and other subjects in Springfield, MA in 2003 in an alternative, urban high school. I t ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

Tutoring is not my part-time job, it is a full time endeavor. I tutor in many subjects including Elementary, Middle and High School curriculums. I tutor all ages. By working with my students, their parents and teachers, we formulate a plan and goals for our sessions. Sometimes I am a tutor for a test, or a coach for a project or a study skills adviser. I have experience working with students with ADHD and those with specific learning issues and IEP's.

A Little Bit About Me...

Although there are many ways to teach, I strongly believe in Experiential Education. Experiential Education tries to find ways to help the student discover an answer instead of being given an answer and makes learning hands on and relevant to the student's own life. This takes more time and patience, but at the end the student has a real understanding of what they are learning. As long as a student wants to learn, I will do all I can to make learning interesting.
As a student at New College of Florida I studied Literature and Sociology before writing an undergraduate thesis on Outdoor Education. During research for my thesis I studied many educational theories and used them for a camping-education program proposal based on Florida educational standards. After graduating, I spent a year in South Carolina teaching outdoor education to elementary school students.

More About This Tutor...

Pre-K, K - 6, Middle School and High School are the grade levels I've taught. I have also been trained to coach teachers with learning strategies to make them more successful in the classroom. Parent education has always been a part of my role as a teacher.
Active learning is the foundation of my teaching style at all levels. We learn more by experiencing the process first hand rather than being told. When learners enjoy themselves they're more likely to retain the learning. "Tell me" and "show me" are the styles teachers often use. I've found more success with "involve me." That leads to understanding. Brain research is also a foundation for my teaching style at all levels.

A Little Bit About Me...

I have worked with many types of learners from those not reading at all to those needing just a boost. I understand how to match a child's ability to a given level so he is learning but not frustrated. I believe in a fun and positive learning setting. I have many games and manipulatives to use in teaching. I also have a wonderful collection of children's books to supplement given teaching materials. Most of all I love seeing a child grow when the "light" goes "on" for him or her. The joy of seeing children succeed academically is not a mystery to me, but a lifelong and attainable goal for all children. I have never had an unteachable or unloveable child.
As an educator, I stayed at home until my own three children were in school. But I always kept my feet in part time work with adults and children needing help. I am an experienced teacher with over 11 years of teaching in programs ... read more

I prefer to teach from where the student is. What I mean by this is that I get to know each student individually (his or her interests and strengths) and try to approach the lesson in a way that I believe would best benefit him or her.
I have nine years of experience as a Language Arts and Reading teacher at the secondary level. I received my Bachelor's degree in English Education. My Florida teaching certificate is current, and I have completed my Reading and ESOL endorsements.

I value hands-on learning and discussion in teaching. Only when there is a discussion can our minds open to what is possible. Whether it is reading a passage, a novel, or an article and discussing what is said, what it could mean, and how it affects us or others or if is going outside to study ecological relationships, I want to engage my students in their learning. Only when a student makes the learning his will he grow and test himself with what he can learn and do. I am patient and am willing to try many avenues to teach your child.
Throughout my life I have tried to acquire a knowledge of the world around me. To meet this end, I was an English major with a Bachelors of Science degree and then I received a Masters in Geography. After school I worked with the U.S. Geological Survey studying water quality. While I loved this work and it taught me how to be a hard scientist, the ... read more

My teaching style is one of patience. I use a 'multi-sensory' approach; focusing on how the student learns. Some students learn from listening, seeing or looking; and others by touching objects. I like to use a variety of materials, books, videos, computers, dvds; puzzles, games; anything that will create that 'aha' learning moment. I like to create a positive learning environment; one that will allow the student to discover and grow.
My teaching experience includes over 20 years of teaching children with special needs. In addition I have taught grades K-6 students in the regular classroom. I graduated from USF in 2000. I have taught in public schools, private school, middle school, elementary school, and adults how to read and to speak English. I have always wanted to be a teacher, but somehow have not found my niche. I have tutored one my neighborhood kids in 6th grade math. English is my specialization. I enjoy teaching grammar, syntax, literature, poetry, reading, and writing.
I love teaching and working with all children. I believe all children can learn, but they each have their own learning style. They each have their own strengths, also. I like to encourage students who are struggling by showing them their strengths. Many times students become overwhelmed and discouraged when they are struggling in school. If they lose confidence in their ability to learn and achieve, it hinders their ability to learn. If a child is taught by someone who believes in him/her mi ... read more

More About This Tutor...

After graduating with my Master’s of Education from the University of Florida in 1996, I began teaching at Emma E. Booker Elementary in Sarasota. I was fortunate to spend my entire teaching career at this school and to be a part of a team that brought the school from a D- rating to a B+ status in the course of a few years. I taught First Grade for the first three years but spent the remaining eight years in the Fourth Grade where I served as Lead Teacher for five years. As the Fourth Grade team leader, our FCAT scores increased consistently, especially in math and writing. I am also a certified New Teacher Mentor, a student intern evaluator, and I have my ESL endorsement.
My teaching style would likely be characterized as chiefly direct instruction and coaching followed by teaching. When introducing a new concept, I believe in explicit instruction coupled with examples, non-exampl ... read more
