My comments on tutoring GED : Work extensively with adult learners.

I believe that all students can and will achieve academic success given appropriate instruction; i.e., instruction that is differentiated according to students' specific needs, learning styles, interests, and personal goals. As a classroom teacher and as a personal tutor, I have seen almost miraculous results in a relatively short period of time, both in terms of academic achievement and student confidence. Passion and enthusiasm for learning is contagious, and I am a carrier. For a dedicated instructor, nothing is more satisfying than watching a student "catch" the learning bug.
After attending (and teaching in) a graduate program in American/British Literature and Language at L.S.U., I realized that my true calling was teaching. I began teaching English, Journalism, S.A.T. Prep., Latin, and other subjects in Springfield, MA in 2003 in an alternative, urban high school. I t ... read more

Experienced Math, Business and Standardized Test tutor

I use the material that the student is familiar with to enhance the students understanding of the principles and processes that are being emphasized. I bring supplemental material for the subject area and use it as needed. Primarily, the student works problems or exercises that are required in front of me. The student verbalizes the steps and thinking processes about the subject so that I can correct fundamentals and errors in logic.
I have tutored math, business and science courses for high school students and adults for the last 20 years. I have tutored for standardized tests (ASVAB, FCAT, PSAT, SAT, ACT, etc) for the last 15 years - saving parents many thousands of dollars in tuition fees. I have also assisted students with homework help, time management and study skills.

I started ten years ago as a ESOL teacher aide in an elemetary school. I worked there for two and a half years. Then, work as a bilingual clerical assistant for at the PIC for a year. After that, I worked as a teacher assistant, teaching Spanish in another elementary school. Finally, I worked for three year in a part-time school, teaching Spanish from Pre-K to 10th grade. I'd have also worked as a substitute teacher for many schools in town, mostly charter schools. As right now, I am a long term sub at MSFA and a tutor for Club- Z. I do private Spanish tutoring also.
Coming from a family where my parents were both educators, no worder why education was so important for us kids growing up. First,I experienced teaching as a teenager leading catechism classes in the Catholic Church for a couple of years. I remember loving it. Later on, I had a change of heart and felt in love with tea ... read more

More About This Tutor...

I tend to treat Math as a Game; how do I (the student) get to the answer? I go over the basics, set up the "plan of attack" to reach a conclusion. It's re-emphasizing the "Rules of the Game". I really want to get the parent(s) involved in this process.
I love tutoring, especially when students get it! The "light bulb" goes on.The most remarks I get are - "why did'nt my teacher show us that way?" I was chosen to teach math at a charter middle school; but the Board of Education (Manatee) voted to shut down that school after three days on the job. Subsequently, I began tutoring Math at Manatee Community College for three years. I've taken several refresher Math courses at MCC (3.66 GPA). This included 2 courses with Dr. Paul Nolting, author of the book "Winning at Math"; which concentrated on visual, auditory and tactile methoda of learning.

A Little Bit About Me...

I love teaching and working with all children. I believe all children can learn, but they each have their own learning style. They each have their own strengths, also. I like to encourage students who are struggling by showing them their strengths. Many times students become overwhelmed and discouraged when they are struggling in school. If they lose confidence in their ability to learn and achieve, it hinders their ability to learn. If a child is taught by someone who believes in him/her miracles can happen. One teacher can make all of the difference. I love being that teacher!
I graduated from USF in 2000. I have taught in public schools, private school, middle school, elementary school, and adults how to read and to speak English. I have always wanted to be a teacher, but somehow have not found my niche. I have tutored one my neighborhood kids in 6th grade math. English is my sp ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I believe in meeting the student at his level of need and then individualizing the teaching as much as possible to fill the gaps in order to bring the educational level in line with expectations or even beyond expectations. I believe in the student's ownership of his own education and until the learning is internalized and made a part of his everyday existence, the learning is merely facts that are easily forgotten. Discovery and discussion are the primary forms of teaching that I use along with modeling. Through these methods, a student learns at his own pace and within the context of what he already knows. In most cases, the student doesn't even realize he is learning. To me that is goal: for a student to realize that learning is a life-long process and that learning for learning's sake should be a part of our everyday lives. That ability is what I seek for all of my students be ... read more
