My comments on tutoring Florida Writes : Taught state test writing preparation for many years in Massachusetts public alternative schools. Tutor extensively to prepare students for state and college exams.

I believe that all students can and will achieve academic success given appropriate instruction; i.e., instruction that is differentiated according to students' specific needs, learning styles, interests, and personal goals. As a classroom teacher and as a personal tutor, I have seen almost miraculous results in a relatively short period of time, both in terms of academic achievement and student confidence. Passion and enthusiasm for learning is contagious, and I am a carrier. For a dedicated instructor, nothing is more satisfying than watching a student "catch" the learning bug.
After attending (and teaching in) a graduate program in American/British Literature and Language at L.S.U., I realized that my true calling was teaching. I began teaching English, Journalism, S.A.T. Tutoring is not my part-time job, it is a full time endeavor. I tutor in many subjects including Elementary, Middle and High School curriculums. I tutor all ages. By working with my students, their parents and teachers, we formulate a plan and goals for our sessions. Sometimes I am a tutor for a test, or a coach for a project or a study skills adviser. I have experience working with students with ADHD and those with specific learning issues and IEP's.

My teaching style would likely be characterized as chiefly direct instruction and coaching followed by teaching. When introducing a new concept, I believe in explicit instruction coupled with examples, non-examples, background history of concept, determining the child’s prior knowledge and experience, and relating the importance of the concept to the student’s daily life. After this, I believe that a teacher then takes on a coaching role and facilitates the student in an understanding of a concept. Finally, I feel that a true test of a child’s understanding is if he/she can teach the material to someone else.
After graduating with my Master’s of Education from the University of Florida in 1996, I began teaching at Emma E. Booker Elementary in Sarasota. I was fortunate to spend my entire teaching career at this school and to be a part of a team that brought the school from a D- rat ... read more

My teaching experience includes over 20 years of teaching children with special needs. In addition I have taught grades K-6 students in the regular classroom. I have also have experience teaching middle school math/science and writing.I am a certified Wilson Reading teacher; a specialized reading system for students with reading difficulties. I was a reading researcher for Florida State University. Presently I am a tutor for the Literacy Council of Manatee County, working with adults.
My teaching style is one of patience. I use a 'multi-sensory' approach; focusing on how the student learns. Some students learn from listening, seeing or looking; and others by touching objects. I like to use a variety of materials, books, videos, computers, dvds; puzzles, games; anything that will create that 'aha' learning moment. I believe in meeting the student at his level of need and then individualizing the teaching as much as possible to fill the gaps in order to bring the educational level in line with expectations or even beyond expectations. I believe in the student's ownership of his own education and until the learning is internalized and made a part of his everyday existence, the learning is merely facts that are easily forgotten. Discovery and discussion are the primary forms of teaching that I use along with modeling. Through these methods, a student learns at his own pace and within the context of what he already knows. In most cases, the student doesn't even realize he is learning. To me that is goal: for a student to realize that learning is a life-long process and that learning for learning's sake should be a part of our everyday lives. That ability is what I seek for all of my students be ... read more

I value hands-on learning and discussion in teaching. Only when there is a discussion can our minds open to what is possible. Whether it is reading a passage, a novel, or an article and discussing what is said, what it could mean, and how it affects us or others or if is going outside to study ecological relationships, I want to engage my students in their learning. Only when a student makes the learning his will he grow and test himself with what he can learn and do. I am patient and am willing to try many avenues to teach your child.
Throughout my life I have tried to acquire a knowledge of the world around me. To meet this end, I was an English major with a Bachelors of Science degree and then I received a Masters in Geography. It is my experience that students do better in smaller groups with more individual attention, which in turn helps me to get a better understanding of how to move forward. I've started at the phonics level in this regard, where patience and understanding is key. I like to maintain a relaxed teaching environment, though I like to keep things moving along.
In regards to experience, I'd taught in a middle school as a Reading Specialist, as a member of the Americorps national service program. During my term, I'd implemented a measurable reading workshop and organized two school-wide literacy events, recruiting over twenty local media personalities to guest read. I have a degree in English from the University of Kentucky, and I have vast experience in document authorship, including both literary and technical compositions.

I have nine years of experience as a Language Arts and Reading teacher at the secondary level. I received my Bachelor's degree in English Education. My Florida teaching certificate is current, and I have completed my Reading and ESOL endorsements.
I prefer to teach from where the student is. What I mean by this is that I get to know each student individually (his or her interests and strengths) and try to approach the lesson in a way that I believe would best benefit him or her.

I wholeheartedly believe in the power of education. I believe that education is the key to our freedom in life. I hope to teach this philosophy to my students. As a teacher, I would describe myself as laid-back and patient. I have found that my patience is what helps me in helping students comprehend the information they are learning. I teach to every learning style and intelligence. I believe all children can learn much more than we expect of them, they just have to be taught the way they learn. Diversity is what makes our world go around, and that is what I teach to my students.
Growing up, I never thought that I would want to be a teacher. After taking a job as a Childcare Counselor with the YMCA, I realized the I was meant to teach and work with children. I love teaching and working with all children. I believe all children can learn, but they each have their own learning style. They each have their own strengths, also. I like to encourage students who are struggling by showing them their strengths. Many times students become overwhelmed and discouraged when they are struggling in school. If they lose confidence in their ability to learn and achieve, it hinders their ability to learn. If a child is taught by someone who believes in him/her miracles can happen. One teacher can make all of the difference. I love being that teacher!
I graduated from USF in 2000. I have taught in public schools, private school, middle school, elementary school, and adults how to read and to speak English. A Little Bit About Me...

One of my favorite aspects of teaching is finding ways to integrate creativity into the learning process. I believe an active and animated learning environment is fun for both the student and tutor- there's no reason to stick to just the basics when generating lessons. Learning new concepts is a great way for students to explore their interests and see how they can relate to the lesson. I also believe positive and patient teaching leads to both genuine learning, and a comfortable experience for the student. Good attitudes always prevail and help achieve the goal of maintaining a fun and effective learning environment.
Over the past five years I have been building experience in classrooms ranging from kindergarten to upper high school. My experience with these learning environments has helped me an undergraduate certificate in k-12 education. I have put special focus on language de ... read more

Here is Some Good Information About Florida Writes Tutoring

The Florida Writing Assessment was implemented in grades 4, 8, and 10 as required by a law passed by the 1990 legislature. Does your student need a tutor? Beginning in 2010, each essay was scored by one rater. In previous years, two raters were used and the scores were averaged. Prior to 2010, a student could have received a half-point score, such as 4.5; whereas since 2010, no half-point scores are possible. Additionally, beginning in 2010, each student within the same grade level was required to write an essay using the same mode of writing (narrative, expository, or persuasive). Florida Writes is difficult for some students. Give your child an edge by selecting a tutor today on your terms, on your schedule, to suit your needs and within budget.
