Teaching is an art form that involves love, patience and understanding. Each student learns differently and requires different teaching styles. I have had students that need help being focused and I have had students who need to relax to open up the brain waves to learning. My teaching style devotes about half the time to direct instruction, but I make that a firm upper limit. The student must do the active learning in a classroom, and I foster this by Socratic questioning, discussions, and project work. Tutoring demands an even lower percentage of direct instruction than does classroom teaching, and as a tutor I encourage the student to direct his own session as much as possible.
