I began working with children who were diagnosed with autism my first year of college (I did this for 7 years). I felt a sense of accomplishment as I watched them grow as people. I realized through these experiences that I wanted to help people learn and become accomplished. Later, I decided to student teach in graduate school. I taught three different writing courses over three years, including this past year as a part-time instructor. While I enjoyed my time teaching in a college classroom, I found myself making the most headway during conference time. In addition, I also worked as a writing tutor at MU's writing center. I recently graduated from the University of Colorado at Boulder, with both a BA in mathematics and a minor in Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences. Additionally, I have taken several advanced courses in astrophysics (physics and astronomy). Beginning in my junior year, I started tutoring first and second year students on campus in various math courses as well as general physics 1. I love teaching and working with students to help them better understand what they are studying. I have great communication skills, and the ability to identify the best way to convey the material in a way that matches the individual needs of the learner. I have a bachelor degree in Chemistry from Colorado College and I have also taken a large number of math courses at the undergraduate level (Calculus 1, 2, and 3, Linear Algebra, number theory, and mathematical models in biology). I have worked as a college tutor for 2 years while completing my degree and I currently teach middle school science. I believe in inquiry based learning where students learn new things by forming questions that they want to answer. When working on a problem I encourage students to come up with questions that they want to answer, to make lists of things they need to know, and then to think of an attack plan to complete the math or science problem.
