A Little Bit About Me...

From as long as I can remember I have had a passion for science and the arts which explains why I hold a Bachelor’s degree in Medical Technology a Masters degree in Art Therapy. Although I do not have a teaching certificate, I have taught painting for over 15 years at a local technical college. I did a lot of tutoring at the junior high level and helped my own children with algebra and science all through high school. My medical background contains and in depth knowledge of chemistry, biology and math, whereas Art Therapy is a combination of art and psychology. I am currently teaching classes for the developmentally disabled at a rehabilitation center.

I don't have a "one size fits all" approach to teaching; rather, I try to tailor my approach to the learning style of the student. I believe that each and every student has the potential to learn whatever subject matter is being investigated. My math teaching style relies heavily on problem solving and repetition. I believe that a huge part of the learning process involves gaining confidence, so I work very hard in that area.
I have degrees in civil engineering and have been in the workforce for 17 years. This has given me a great background in math and science. A Little Bit About Me...

From my tutoring experiences last year, my teaching style would best be described as very proactive. Many of the students were extremely frustrated by the concepts that they did not understand. This created an apathetic attitude towards the subject. Due to the lack of interest that I observed, I decided to go through problem by problem with the students. I talked them through each problem, and asked the students questions, but required them to calculate the answer. As we practiced and practiced, the students began to use the techniques that I taught them to calculate the answers on their own.
I am a second year UW Madison student pursuing a math degree. I go through all the concepts with the individual pertaining to what portion of statistics they are studying at that time. I will then walk them through a couple of examples demonstrating how to properly obtain the correct answer. I will follow that up by asking them to do a problem without any direct instruction from me. I will watch them work on the problem to assure they are working on it properly. If any mistakes are made I will politely point them out as the individual is working. Finally, I will ask them to work on problems completely on their own and I will check their answers when they are done. I feel the only way to learn statistics, or any math for that matter, is through repetition and working on a lot of problems.

A Little Bit About Me...

As a summa cum laude graduate with a BS in Chemistry I worked for over 25 years in the printing industry. One of my responsibilities was to explain to the pressmen the chemistry and physics of the printing process so that they could be better printers. This led me to an interest in relating science to the everyday world. I also have a passion for understanding how we know what the scientists tell us.
