A Little Bit About Me...

From as long as I can remember I have had a passion for science and the arts which explains why I hold a Bachelor’s degree in Medical Technology a Masters degree in Art Therapy. Although I do not have a teaching certificate, I have taught painting for over 15 years at a local technical college. I did a lot of tutoring at the junior high level and helped my own children with algebra and science all through high school. My medical background contains and in depth knowledge of chemistry, biology and math, whereas Art Therapy is a combination of art and psychology. I am currently teaching classes for the developmentally disabled at a rehabilitation center.

I enjoy teaching students of all ages, and the challenges and rewards that go with it. I believe that students learn at their own individual pace, and as the teacher I need to accomodate this while encouragin progress. My studies in psychology taught me the importance of positive reinforcement and constructive communication to the learning process. I believe learning occurs in small steps and concepts need to be broken down into smaller pieces for learning to effectively occur; these steps need to be mastered before the student moves on. A Little Bit About Me...

I am a second year UW Madison student pursuing a math degree. I have completed Calculus 1, Calculus 222, Calculus 234, Calculus 3 based engineering statistics, and Actuarial Science (a class designed to prepare actuarial students for the P exam). Next semester I will take Linear Algebra and the Basic Concepts of Math. I enjoy working with young people very much, and I have an intense passion for math, so I have chosen to pursue a career in Math education. During my freshman year at UW Madison, I volunteered weekly at Sennett Middle School to tutor students in math and science. I go through all the concepts with the individual pertaining to what portion of statistics they are studying at that time. I will then walk them through a couple of examples demonstrating how to properly obtain the correct answer. I will follow that up by asking them to do a problem without any direct instruction from me. I will watch them work on the problem to assure they are working on it properly. If any mistakes are made I will politely point them out as the individual is working. Finally, I will ask them to work on problems completely on their own and I will check their answers when they are done. I feel the only way to learn statistics, or any math for that matter, is through repetition and working on a lot of problems.
