A Little Bit About Me...

In my college curriculum and internships, I experienced and observed a great deal about people and various styles of processing information. That is, every person has a rather unique way of learning. I would think the most important point to tap into, when tutoring someone, would be to discover how he/she best learns and on what levels. My strongest subject is English and grammatical skills. I have a high degree of creativity and I am flexible and patient. The key focus in my curriculum (Therapeutic Recreation) was to discover what makes a person come alive, what is his/her passion, and to design a plan with achievable goals to enable that person to attain a higher level of morale/success.
I initially try to find what he/she is struggling with, and what strengths and weaknesses are present. I allow the person to ask questions in a fluid, spontaneous, "let's see as we tack ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

Literally all my life I have been asked by students, parents and teachers to help students who were having trouble. I get tremendous fulfillment from watching someone who has been frustrated finally "get it." In addition to teaching music lessons, tutoring all subjects, and homeschooling my own two children, I have worked for the last 17 years with a private school. There I have taught a wide variety of subjects, but they depend on me the most heavily for high school sciences and maths. I am currently a registered substitute teacher, state certified to teach music and high school math, and I am working toward certification in more subjects. Due to my own hunger for education, I am actively pursuing a Masters Degree in Math Education.

More About This Tutor...

After falling into a tutoring situation in 2007 with a High School AP Biology student, I decided that tutoring may be the right thing for me. I was hired the next year by Advanced Learning Center and tutored K-5 Reading and Math for a total of 11 students. I feel tutoring is a perfect fit for my personality as it is most rewarding to see the direct effect on the children. I really enjoy being involved in the growth of their minds and confidence.
I am understanding and really try to engage in learning about the children, and seeing how their brain learns. I try to make things fun, yet keep a level of dicipline that evokes respect. I create goals, and fun projects that help develop their confidence and understanding of the subject.

A Little Bit About Me...

I highly value my hands-on, real-life experience raising, guiding, and educating my gifted daughter, who has excelled beyond my expectations. This has been an exceptionally challenging and immensely vital role that ranks equal in importance with working in a traditional classroom and/or tutoring venue. I was active in her public classrooms throughout elementary school as Art Mom and in a variety of other capacities as her teachers' needs arose. I was also active in PTA, Field Days, Fall & Spring Festivals, etc. In middle school I was active with several "campus clubs" after school; and when my daughter was in high school I was Dance Team Mom, and helped the girls on the team keep their grades up through encouragement and offers of help with their studies. Prior to raising my daughter, I volunteered as a Sunday School teacher at church, a church camp counselor, a group facilitator for hig ... read more

I believe that children need to find a reason to have a goal of being educated. Coming from a small town and having such a global perspective, I love helping children see their place in this vast world and that they are an important global citizen. I try to show them through energetic discovery, that all this "boring stuff" leads to much more interesting and and fun stuff. Children need to know that they are important assets to us all and that they are more than capable of over acheiving whatever they set out to do.
Studying French and Russian Studies at Stetson allowed me gain more than a grasp on those two languages, but insight to the cultures, an appreciation for and ability to interpret literature and poetry, a deeper understanding of history, geography, and politics as well as a desire to share all of this with others.

I really enjoy working with kids and helping them succeed. I am a firm believer that every child has the potential to be a great student. My teaching style is very interactive. My educational background is stellar. The most important tool that I have acquired during all of those years, however, is NOT memorization, NOT spelling or grammar - it's the ability to THINK. Looking at the "Big Picture" enables me to see beyond the immediate problem, to find long-term, sustainable solutions. This skill extends across disciplines--whether they be English, mathematics, history or Spanish.
I believe in "Yes, You Can!", instead of "No, You Can't." Positive reinforcement and an emphasis upon disciplinary "best practices" can fertilize the seeds of personal and academic growth. In particular, I believe in focusing upon HOW a student learns. For instance, if a student learns visually, I like to tailor learning strategies toward that student's strength.
