I am passionate about teaching and learning, and I love all people. I am an advocate of task-based learning, multiple intelligences, and the all-around inductive/constructivist approach to learning. I am a firm believer in the idea that all people have the same innate capacity to learn, but that this is manifested in different ways. This is particularly important because I beleive a good teacher should be able to discover the individual and specific ways that a student relates or acquires information best (visually, aurally, kinesthetically etc.) and can then take that information and develop appropriate excercises and teaching materials to help maximize that student's learning experience. I believe in a multifaceted approach to the different types of learners, aural, visual, kinesthetic, and reading/writing and aim to incorporate all learning styles in my teaching. I watched my brother struggle through school and learning disabilities all his life, so I tutored him through math and English since 7th grade. I found if you connect with a student and create ways that speak to him, you can foster learning. I helped my brother write flow charts on full-length mirrors to chart plotlines from books. I have just finished my first year in the MFA-Fiction program at The University of Montana where I also worked as a Teaching Assistant in the English department. As a Teaching Assistant, I taught Basic Composition to undergraduates. Teaching one section of composition each semester, I was responsible for lesson plans, running hour long class periods, grading student essays, holding student conferences, and attending various teaching workshops with my fellow TAs. With my years of being around and in an educational environment, I have picked up patterns of repetition and summary to reinforce ideas being conveyed. I, myself, learn best by doing. I teach by example, leading the student through a problem by asking questions about each step so that they can learn how to approach the problem themselves.
