Confidence creates an interest in learning

Substitute Teaching from 03/15/2011 to present Chess Instructor from 12/17/2003 to 04/30/2004 Tutor for Western Michigan University 09/15/1997-04/30/2000. I have taught students ranging fro pre-school to 12th grade and also tutored at the unversity level. I feel most confident with students ranging from 3rd to 6th grade and at the college level or older. My main strengths are an ability to adapt to students with special needs and recognize that a lack of interest or focus is often the result of a lack of confidence. My experience in education has been wide and full of variety. I began working as a linguistics tutor for the university. I worked with several students over the course of the two years in which I worked for the department. I began my field work at Mt. Morris Junior High School performing my observations. I use a variety of teaching styles while instructing students. Alternating between styles helps to keep minds engaged and participation at a maximum. When covering content I use many examples that relate to real life, that way students can relate it to something they have experienced or seen. Dr. Segal taught us that traditional teaching methods are outmoded. Therefore I came to my own conclusion that as a teacher I would allow my students to confront me on their terms and make the learning experience as relaxed as possible. Students won't learn anything if A) the environment is unsuited to them and B) if you jump down their throat over every little thing. The important question to ask them is "why?" or "what do you think?"
