My formal teaching experience consists of weekly classes and workshops at Artful Journey, and over three years at ArtWorks Fine Art Studio. While there I taught traditional drawing and painting with a focus on teaching students to draw realistically. I guided all ages through color theory, design, drawing, painting, and printmaking. I also helped manage our studios, set up new curriculum for our summer workshops and developed and created working examples. I also held a teaching assistantship at Cranbrook, which consisted of mentoring my fellow graduate students, managing our facilities, and assisting our artists in residence. I am a graduate of both the University of Colorado and Adams State College. I hold a Master's degree in Secondary Education as well as a Initial Teacher's license. I have experience as a volunteer tutor in social studies and math, a paid tutor in reading, a student teacher, and as a substitute for the last year and a half. I also have experience as a mentor to young people through the YMCA. My teaching style revolves around the specific learning needs of students because each person not only learns differently but has specific strengths and weakness. As teachers it is our job to meet the needs of all learners. I do not believe in presently material in one way, or one way all the time.

I became a para and went on to get my teaching degrees.Initially I received a BS in Human Services(This degree dealt with ethics, social work, counseling, and confidential issues) I felt these were issues as a teacher that would be beneficial. After working as a substitute for 2 years,I applied and was offered a Special Education position. I took the job and went to Regis University while I was working with 7th and 8th grade students. I worked at this position for three years, the year I graduated 2007 the school was faced with downsizing and I was let go. I worked the following year with 7th and 8th grade students in a different school district. I continue to move forward with learning and teaching. I enjoy teaching and learning from students. I feel everyone has something to share and assist with understanding different beliefs, cultures and ideas. I strive to teach to all modalities.

It wasn’t until my boys started school and I spent time in their classrooms that I realized I had a passion and an aptitude for working with young students. I was hired by the Boulder Valley School District in 2007 as a para and soon after was working one on one with special needs students in kindergarten. This realization prompted me to re-enter the college scene as a graduate student, which I finished this December. I do best working one on one with students or in very small groups. I like to get to know my students. This helps me determine how they learn and how I can make their experience as useful as possible. Also, its more fun to do work with someone that you respect and understand.
