I find it important that they know the basic concepts before attempting to master the subject. I like to teach using a whiteboard or chalkboard, if possible, allowing the students to interact and work problems until the material is understood. I am a well qualified math tutor and have 3 years of tutoring experience at the collegiate level. I was the lead math and engineering tutor for the University of New Mexico's Engineering Student Services (ESS) Department. With a lot of subjects, especially math and science, students become discouraged because the content seems so useless.
