After earning a bachelor's degreee in Psychology and receiving my Elementary Education certification at Gonzaga University in 2007, I worked at Mario Umana Middle School Academy teaching environmental education in Boston. I currently work as a teacher's assistant in a Supported Learning Center program for students with Asperger’s Syndrome. I work one-on-one with high school students in the program, assisting them with work in math, science, English and social studies. Additionally, when I was in high school, I worked as a math tutor for algebra students. I love teaching and working with children of all ages. I believe in encouraging children to discover what they are to learn instead of rote learning for most things, and I also believe in establishing automaticity for some tasks, such as math facts and geometry theorems. I believe that all children are capable of learning with the right approach. It is important to persist in teaching a concept from different angles until the child "gets it." A good educator can make a world of difference to a child. I am a strong proponent of reinforcing a child's strengths through positive encouragement and exhibiting an enthusiasm for the subject at hand to foster interest on the part of the student.
