I would LOVE to help your child reach their potential!

I am structured yet kind. Kids need to feel a connection to their teacher in order to give 100%. I work a great deal on building community in my classroom and allowing kids to appreciate the diversity among themselves. Not all kids are going to excel in all areas. They need to value what they are really good at and share that with their peers. This also creates miniature "experts" which makes all kids feel good. Once a child feels successful; in one area it encourages them to tackle something they are less comfortable with.
I have worked as an elementary school teacher for 7 years. I have been fortunate enough to teach grades 1, 2, 3, and 4. In my experience I have found that children build confidence through small successes. My philosophy is to set maintainable goals allowing students to meet them frequently building confidence and motivation.

A Little Bit About Me...

After graduating from the University of Wisconsin- Eau Claire, my wife and I moved to South Korea and taught English. This opportunity allowed us to gain teaching experience and become absorbed in another culture. Upon completing our one year contract we then decided to move to Costa Rica and continue teaching English for six months. I am currently working on a Ph.D. at UNM and plan to become a professor.

My experience at the preschool taught me the value of coordinated language use in dealing with different students in different situations between care-givers. Thinking in terms of classes I taught at the University—which all had a strong writing component—I made sure that the students had a baseline level of knowledge of English grammar. In most cases that meant that a certain portion of class time was devoted to grammar. My thought is that if a student can't write a coherent sentence, writing an entire paper is going to be next to impossible. So I'm rather religious about instilling the basics and probably fall into the "Expert" and "Formal Authority" category. But once the basics are out of the way, I'm equally a "Personal Model" and "Facilitator." Development of critical thinking skills is, well, critical. Students also need encouragement and choice. A Little Bit About Me...

I started my teaching exposure when I was 16, being involved in the Christian Education Ministry of my church, teaching Preschool. In 2001, I had my first formal teaching job as a Preschool Assistant Teacher.
