My comments on tutoring Elementary Reading : One year of experience helping to improve childhood literacy as an AmeriCorps member at an educational nonprofit.

I have a flexible teaching style that aims to address the individual learning styles of my students. I believe in helping students reach the point where they can use the skills that I am teaching them on their own rather than relying on my services. I believe, as well, that a serious focus on learning should be tempered by a sense of fun - by making learning enjoyable.
I have over five years of experience in teaching and one-on-one tutoring with students ranging from elementary-school children to undergraduates. EXPERIENCED IN ACT PREP AND ALTERNATIVE LEARNING STUDENTS...

I am a licensed Social worker with tutoring experience in and out of college. I have the most experience in tutoring Algebra and other math. I have a student now that I am helping with AP English who has dyslexia. I enjoy watching her grammar skills increase and her overall understanding of the concepts develop. I am great with any age individual and have the patience it takes to work with any kind of student (special needs included).
I believe that people learn the best when they understand the meaning and logic behind what they are learning. When a student can see a pattern develop they develop an understanding that can be universally applied to many different areas of study and life circumstances. Learning is different then memorizing. It is especially important to understand the concepts behind the subject matter when planning continue in a similar learning subject.

I was a peer tutor for four years as a student at Lubbock Christian University, working with fellow students in English, history, study skills, GRE prep, philosophy, and algebra. I am currently working on a Master's Degree in Education. I have tutored occasionally since graduating from LCU, working with elementary kids through adults pursuing graduate education.

My teaching career began as an Educational Assistant in 1977, in the state of California. Because of my daughter's medical needs, I was not able to finish my education as planned. Fortunately, I did not give up, I resumed my studies and in 2006, I earned my teaching degree. I'm endorsed in TESOL, Modern Classical Languages, and Bilingual Education.
I have high standards for my students, and I expect responsibility on their part. I have a good sense of humor, and enjoy hands-on activities.

I would LOVE to help your child reach their potential!

I am structured yet kind. Kids need to feel a connection to their teacher in order to give 100%. I work a great deal on building community in my classroom and allowing kids to appreciate the diversity among themselves. Not all kids are going to excel in all areas. They need to value what they are really good at and share that with their peers. This also creates miniature "experts" which makes all kids feel good. Once a child feels successful; in one area it encourages them to tackle something they are less comfortable with.
I have worked as an elementary school teacher for 7 years. I have been fortunate enough to teach grades 1, 2, 3, and 4. In my experience I have found that children build confidence through small successes. My philosophy is to set maintainable goals allowing students to meet them frequently building confidence and motivation.
