I like to start by encouraging the student to demonstrate what they know, and then give them a little nudge of guidance when they come to something that confuses them. If they're really stumped, then I try to teach them first from a conventional standpoint, then switch to a more example-based explanation. There is almost always an example or an analogy that can explain something that is confusing a student. Sometimes it takes a few examples before you find the one that makes sense to that person, but with a little patience it becomes easily understandable for the student.

My teaching style focuses on teaching students how to find the big picture. If they understand what it is they are trying to do, then showing them how to get there becomes easier. Any student can learn math, and have the capability to understand numbers, this just comes harder for some and easier for others. I started out as a student tutor in the early 90's in California. I finished my MA in mathematics in 2000 at Cal State Sacramento.
