My approach to composition is simple; think, write, repeat. This means that I use a process-oriented method as students draft and re-draft based upon the new ideas and insights which are gained through the practice of writing. I also employ post-process pedagogy, encouraging student participation in the world around them. I want them to engage with the private and public spheres. My goal for my students is to think about how ideas are intertwined across the disciplines and how the critical thinking skills learned in one course can work with the theoretical skills they learn in another. When they leave me, I want them to be self-sufficient learners who can analyze, organize and teach others what they have learned. As a parent of middle school students, I understand the importance of motivating students by using real world examples and providing hands-on experiences. I enjoy working one-one-one with students, learning their strengths, and using those to have fun and make meaningful progress on the curriculum. Because of my professional background, I believe in basing study on solid principles such as methodology, repetition, and use of the scientific method to help the student retain the concepts in the long term. I have a Bachelor of Music Education Degree from the University of Cincinnati College Conservatory of Music, and a Master of Arts Degree in Music Education from Ball State University. I have an Indiana Professional Teacher's License in all music levels.I have been a school music teacher for over 18 years, a music contest accompanist, private piano and instrumental teacher for over 15 years. I have served as a music contest judge. I was a 10 year member of the Indianapolis Symphonic Choir, a church choir director for 10 years and a music leader in church for over 20 years.
