More About This Tutor...

Science is similar to math where it is important to practice problems. I mostly tutor Organic Chemistry, in which I prefer to help individuals work out extra practice problems (or those assigned by the teacher) to practice concepts. I have a similar approach in the other subjects I tutor. It is best in science to work out hard problems outside of class because then it reviews all concepts needed to answer these problems on a test. My students always do much better after a tutor session with me because of this. It is also a little more exciting than simply summarizing a teacher's lecture.
I am studying Cellular and Molecular Biology at University of Cincinnati. I will graduate in May 2015. I have taken and excelled at Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, Cell Structure and Function, Genetics, Biology, Ecology/Evolution. I have also taken math through Applied Calculus I. I have taken education classes at Northern Kentucky University. At one point, I was considering on being a Art Teacher. I didn't finish with that path, but I did gain much experience with children and knowledge during that time in working with students. I have worked and studied special needs children as well. I still consider going back for a Master's at some point in education. I think this job would be beneficial in my goals, and for my students, and a great learning experience for us both.
I am not overbearing. I am laid back, but at the same time, I make sure that the student learns what he/she needs to learn. I am very patient. I try to respect the student and not make learning seem like a chore. Building a foundation of learning skills, even during a short tudoring session can really change a student's approach in all of their classes.

A Little Bit About Me...

As an English major, I spent all 4 years at my private instutition tutoring my fellow students, not only in English and writing courses, but in all academic classes in which I had received a grade of "A" or "B". 3 of my 4 years at Lindsey Wilson were spent in the Education department, as I originally wanted to be a high school English teacher. I also spent several summers as a Camp Counselor, working with children aged 7-15 as well.
I like to determine my teaching style by first evaluating a child's current progress and learning style. Learning is a very individualized process, therefore, teaching must also be individual. I am a relaxed person, and I like to find a way to relate material to a child in a way that he/she will not only understand, but retain. Flash cards are great for some children, and other children will learn better with a pneumonic device, while still other le ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

As a Purdue graduate, I was the recipient of the highest level of instruction in math and science. As an undergraduate I was named on the Dean’s list six times and was inducted into the Phi Eta Sigma Honor Society. I have earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Aeronautical Engineering. In order to be granted this degree I was required to gain a great understanding in many areas of math and science. In addition, I have been on the cutting edge of computer science from the first hand held calculators. I can program in FORTRAN, Assembly, Basic, Pascal, and C languages, on a variety of platforms. After working as an engineer for 20 years, I then pursued a teaching license and have taught High School math for the last decade.

My teaching style revolves around the idea of mastering important aspects of a subject area before moving to a more difficult subject area. In our current education system, students are allowed to move to more difficult courses without having the necessary building blocks. Through one-on-one tutoring, it is possible to take a couple steps back, assess a student's current capabilities and tailor lessons to the individual student (i.e. one student may need to back track and practice fractions before moving on to more difficult algebra). I also enjoy working with students are looking to excel beyond their grade level by challenging their problem-solving capabilities with new ideas and techniques in a variety of subject areas.
In between obtaining my BA in political science and English from the University of Mississippi in 2009 and returning to school for chemical engineering I spent a ... read more

I love helping others learn and achieve higher levels of academic success. Working with College students is always neat since the material is challenging and engaging. But, I also love children and enjoy working with them in mathematics, spelling, and science. I'm an easy-going and patient person who feels honored to help children and adults alike meet their full potential. A lot of times, a small amount of individualized attention can go a long way.
I have earned a BS in Mathematics with Actuary Emphasis. This allowed me to become very well-rounded as I studied Finance, Accounting, Business, and Computer Science along with my Math core. I have presented two individual research projects at Mathematics Association of America Conferences and learned great presenting techniques and communication skills.
