A Little Bit About Me...

I'm a math minor at the University of Montana, and I've been tutoring at the Math Learning Center there since I was a freshman. I have experience tutoring with all of the classes listed, and I learned a lot of them from different institutions so I can help give a new way of thinking about the subject.
I try to teach conversationally and help students get comfortable with the process of doing the problems over just giving the answers. I tend to go with asking questions as a default--I've found it really helps learning, especially with classes like math that are more about understanding the process than regurgitating answers--but during those times we all have when you have no idea where to start, I'm happy to explain it out! Through studying adult learning styles, I discovered that studies show utilizing all facets of learning - writing, audio, visual, and hands on - leads to the highest levels of retention. While attending college I was apart of many different study groups. In such study groups we would teach each other the information we needed to learn. Through this I interacted with many students teaching many things in many different styles. When I was in upper level courses I would assist the underclassmen with their homework so that they could grasp the information.
The style of teaching that I use is experience. I believe that people learn best when they work through and actually practice the issues. As a life-long student, I aspire to a life of teaching. While an undergraduate at St. Olaf College, I developed strong communication and interpersonal skills as a writing center tutor and ESL mentor.
