My comments on tutoring Spanish : Although I'm not fluent, I would call myself proficient in Spanish. I can hold and enjoy a conversation. I can definitely be of help to beginners.

I am a firm believer in the immersion style of learning languages. Understanding the grammar and acquiring a decent vocabulary are of course indispensable, but from personal experience learning a variety of languages, I've found that simply speaking is the best way to learn. We don't learn languages to perform well on tests, we learn them to communicate, and to see the world through a different culture's cognitive perception!
I've been tutoring many friends or meeting 1 on 1 with University students to help them with English, German, and Spanish for about 4 years. Often, these have been unofficial language-exchange scenarios; for instance, I would meet with someone with whom I would speak for half an hour in English, then half an hour in Spanish (or whichever language it happened to be). This can be a very challenging and very exciting method of learning, and I believe it is the mo ... read more

My comments on tutoring Spanish : I have an endorsement in Modern Classical Languages

I have high standards for my students, and I expect responsibility on their part. I have a good sense of humor, and enjoy hands-on activities.
My teaching career began as an Educational Assistant in 1977, in the state of California. Because of my daughter's medical needs, I was not able to finish my education as planned. Fortunately, I did not give up, I resumed my studies and in 2006, I earned my teaching degree. I'm endorsed in TESOL, Modern Classical Languages, and Bilingual Education.

I taught English as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Korea, then received a Master's Degree in teaching and worked in Mexico, Japan, Iran, and the United States, teaching and also coordinating a bilingual program for refugees with the Tacoma Public Schools. I then became a Foreign Service Officer with the Department of State, serving on five continents and three islands. I speak Japanese, Korean, French, Spanish, and Dutch, and have extensive experience in writing and editing a variety of reports and related documents.
I work to identify each student's strengths and to build upon these, while also noting areas for improvement and tailoring lessons and assignments designed to address these areas. Because people learn in several different ways, I strive to individualize instructional approaches based on my perception of what works best for each student. I have always been drawn to children and have enjoyed being with and teaching them. Before working in preschool, my teaching style was unrefined, and based largely on a general paternalistic instinct. My experience at the preschool taught me the value of coordinated language use in dealing with different students in different situations between care-givers. I learned how to be very direct with students while still maintaining compassion and understanding. I respect children's need for expression, but I also know the importance of rules and boundaries. Within those boundaries, though, I believe that kids have a lot to teach older generations as we teach them. My personal attitude towards education adds great respect for the student and her or his mind to respect for myself and my mind, with the goal of bettering both.

Through out my experience tutoring a diverse group of kids, I have learned to love and appreciate the art of teaching. It’s important to understand the many differences and backgrounds in every child, only then, we can begin to understand their special needs. I do believe everyone can learn given the opportunity, and resources needed to flourish to their maximum potential. I also believe that as an educator, you must challenge them to a superior level, strive for excellence. It is our job as educators to ignite the spark of knowledge; it is our job to encourage them to go far beyond of what it is expected of them

A Little Bit About Me...

One of the most rewarding aspects about guiding students is finding the way they channel their thoughts and using it to their advantage. As a result of being ADHD, I am sympathetic to the struggles many students have to concentrate and as a result I am a tenacious but patient teacher, always determined to make the lesson fun and interesting as well as educational. I choose to live by example, just as my favorite teachers and professors did with me. I give children respect, boost their confidence and make them love what they are doing. Even though I have found my approach to be successful, I am always looking for new ways to engage the mind of my student. As a tutor, I provide goals for the children. I find that once the students have goals, they are much more excited about reaching them, and do reach them with my help. Learning is fun and exciting, just as it should be!

A Little Bit About Me...

I believe that children learn best when the material is most tangible to them. When teaching or tutoring, I make a huge effort to incorporate the students' names into math problems. I make it my goal to find out as much as I can about the students, and then put them in those environments in an imaginative way in some sort of math problem. I am extremely patient with my students, and appreciate gaining knowledge from their statements and insights. When appropriate, manipulatives are wonderful tools as well. Hands-on learners sometimes need to have creative input and control over the situation, and manipulatives allow the student and me to model the problem in a whole new way.

I am confident that my teaching experience with kids, young professionals and adults, combined with my education at Antonio of Nebrija University of Spain, will verify my qualifications. I specially love working with kids and youth. At Nebrija University, I have learned new teaching methodologies which focus on the communicative skill of Spanish as a second language, and task and constructive approach teaching Spanish as a foreign language. I have had great results applying these techniques with my students at beginning to intermediate levels of Spanish. As a native speaker (Perú) I feel honored to teach Spanish language. During the last three years I have tutored students of different ages and level of Spanish. I have also tutored basic Italian and ESL

A Little Bit About Me...

I have received a degree in English and was a pre-law student. I owned a real estate company in 1990s. I was in the Navy (scored 95% on ASVAB) and worked in the field of intelligence. I acquired legal experience working within real estate and finance. I have an intricate knowledge of contract law, working knowledge of medical law - where it governs patient interaction, privacy, medical records and patient rights. Regarding teaching and tutoring experience, I taught as an adjunct professor in college algebra. My reviews while teaching were that I was "very knowledgeable". I am currently pre-med and retaking several science classes. I am comfortable tutoring first semester chemistry and physics. In addition, I am conversational in Spanish and had 1 yr in college.

My formal teaching experience is limited to two years with seventh graders and high schoolers. When I pursed graduate work in cell biology, experiences with formal education were limited. However giving seminars and training technical staff was common and bears similarity to formal teaching. Tutoring is a happy mix between formal and informal teaching combining focused attention and designing specific tasks for student growth.
In a word, my teaching style is Socratic. Often that means I respond to a student’s question with a question that enables them to figure out answers for themselves. Other times, my questions are designed to stimulate ideas beyond the student’s view so they need to “stretch” a bit. I firmly believe this style encourages the student’s creativity and belief in their own capabilities. Coupled to the formal teaching and certainly as important is the relatio ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

During my one year contract in South Korea I taught children of all ages, from 6 to 15. Working with children was very enjoyable and rewarding. My style of teaching is very upbeat and interactive. I also like to use different methods of teaching focusing on participation. I believe that children learn more if the class is lively and engaging. My goal is to make the class fun as well as educational. In Costa Rica I taught English to business professionals at several different companies. Although teaching adults is much different than teaching children, I used the same style of teaching.
After graduating from the University of Wisconsin- Eau Claire, my wife and I moved to South Korea and taught English. This opportunity allowed us to gain teaching experience and become absorbed in another culture. Upon completing our one year contract we then decided to move to Costa R ... read more

Teaching anything is a very gratifying experience. The look on a person’s face upon acquisition of a new skill or acquisition of any new information is worth a hundred words. My approach to teaching many times involves humor. Sometimes even a little humor serves to relax a person and that can facilitate learning. An obstacle to learning is sometimes the tenseness and frustration of attempting to understand anything. Because we learn in many different ways, teaching requires an approach that is understood by the learner, not what the teacher feels is most acceptable. I employ the teaching style that if a student does not understand the subject matter, it is time to change that method and explore the student’s best abilities to learn. My ultimate goal is the success of the student, especially if the student can say, “Oh, I get it now.”
