I try to find a common, basic level of understanding with the student and then show how a few key insights can help the student broaden her/his knowledge. In math, for example, this typically means showing how elementary concepts can be applied to simplify more complex problems, such as showing how such things as the distributive and associative properties are being used in solving equations, sometimes in a context where these things are often glossed over. Younger people need sometimes more than one exposure to math and the sciences. I know I did. Part of the problem is the pre anxiety associated with taking these more rigorous courses. My philosophy is to break down the subjects into digestible parts. Also I feel the student must be shown practical applications with various different resources, revealing the common threads of the processes.
