LEARN THE GUITAR BY WITHOUT (FIRST) LEARNING TO READ MUSIC!

My Approach To Teaching Guitar... At the early age of 14, I discovered that I had a “knack” for music when I had the opportunity for a friend to show me how to play a few basic chords on his guitar (because I didn’t own one myself). Although press- ing down on the strings hurt my fingertips, and my fingers kept slipping out of position, I fell in love with the guitar’s sound when it all finally came together... Eventually, my mother bought me my first guitar! After time continued to pass, I discovered that what was allowing me to get deeper involved with the guitar was that I was developing an “ear”or “feel” for music which simply means when I heard music, I was able to figure out how to play what I heard - the chord structure, the rhythm, the melody - all without reading music! I am a recent graduate of kennesaw State University, with a Bachelor's Degree in Biology. I believe that I am competent in various areas of biology and chemistry, and will be able to convey that competence. I have taught and tutored at my church and in other volunteer programs since high school. I also currently give drum lessons at a Stephen's Music Company.
I always find myself trying to lead others to figure out material on their own as a I set guidelines for them as they do so. I believe this is the best way for them to learn the material. I do not like to tell my students the answers, inhibiting them from thinking things through. I try to find different ways of teaching material in order to keep them motivated, as well.

The method of teaching I prefer is maieutic, i.e., one which draws knowledge from the student, rather than attempts to place it in him/her from without. To me, the process of asking questions and allowing the student's curiosity and intelligence to reach conclusions is far more effective than one-sided lecturing. I am endlessly creative, coming up with myriad examples to illustrate concepts.
In 2006 I taught graphic design topics at Westwood College. In 2007 I taught the same subject at The Creative Circus (roughly equivalent to an MBA program for designers, writers, photographers, and art directors).
