I prefer to work with motivated students. I enjoy one on one tutoring best, but I can work in a group setting. I think I am best at explaining concepts verbally. Particularly when I tutor math, I like to explain the reasoning and concepts behind what I am teaching, rather than encouraging rote memorization. For SAT and ACT prep, I think it is primarily a matter of explaining the structure of the test and teaching ways to address different questions. The content is important and I can teach that as well, but the key to high scores is familiarity with the layout of the test. I have tutored in math from 6th through 12th grade previously. Once while subbing, I entered a classroom where the students had been allowed to watch Jerry Springer on TV for the last two weeks. I couldn't let this continue, but I saw how emotional the class was about the show. I encouraged them to write their own talk show and told them we would perform it the next day. I find that connecting student's interest with the subject matter to be learned is the best way to teach.
