In the early seventies I was a tutor for a Canadian third grader through Operation Share at Mesa Community College San Diego Ca where I was studying elementary education. From 1985 through 1987 I worked at a domestic violence shelter often working with the children of abused women to help them stay current in school. Most were elementary school age. During that time I also volunteered for C.A.P.P (Child Assault Prevention Project) which taught elementary age children techniques avoid physical and sexual assault. The Omega School, an alternative hiigh school that occupied a few rooms in an an old office buiilding, helped high risk students who couldn't fit into a regular high school environment obtain their GED. Some students were gifted but unable to adjust to the regimens of regular high school. Others stole cars or acted out in other ways. As the child of a school system administrative professional, I have always spent extra time in the school environment. As a high school freshman I began to tutor elementary school students based on the needs highlighted by their teachers. I spent a lot of time working one on one with English as a secound language students. I assisted with their writting, reading, and basic math skills. Additionally I work particularly well with withdrawn children who need special attention.
My teaching style is simple. As it has not been professionally nurtured I have taken my ques from those I have taught. It is simply to provide what is needed.
