II believe that writing is a craft that anyone can learn--anad that the craft can be found in revisison: in re-shaping draft after draft. I also believe that most people are smart. i've had high school students who read at a 3rd grade level--but they were smart when addressing subjects of interest to them. I teach by starting with the familiar--what students understand--and then buiding on it. In teachiing high school in East L.A., I would ask students to write about literature, say Wuthering Heights, starting with what themes were familiar. As the child of a school system administrative professional, I have always spent extra time in the school environment. As a high school freshman I began to tutor elementary school students based on the needs highlighted by their teachers. I spent a lot of time working one on one with English as a secound language students. I assisted with their writting, reading, and basic math skills. Additionally I work particularly well with withdrawn children who need special attention.
