I like to start by encouraging the student to demonstrate what they know, and then give them a little nudge of guidance when they come to something that confuses them. If they're really stumped, then I try to teach them first from a conventional standpoint, then switch to a more example-based explanation. There is almost always an example or an analogy that can explain something that is confusing a student. Sometimes it takes a few examples before you find the one that makes sense to that person, but with a little patience it becomes easily understandable for the student.
I received a BS in Computer Science, software engineering, and a minor in Mathematics. I tutored mostly computer courses (programming, ex ... read more

Teaching for 11 years in deaf education, I have enjoyed seeing a growth in my students’ math academic progress in middle school and high school level. Most children who are deaf have a delay in language learning. A deaf child who uses sign language, English is not their first language. Math, reading, and writing are the three academic subjects that require special goals with appropriate lesson plans to enhance each student’s weakness in specific areas in mathematics. Math It is my responsibility to understand each student's weakness in math and I need to take them further in understanding this subject area.
Graduating from three different institutions, I have earned two master and a bachelor degrees – MS in Biology and MA in Special Education, and BA in Biology. Math and Science have my main strengths in earning the degrees. Being deaf since birth, I have learned a lot about deaf ... read more

My teaching style focuses on teaching students how to find the big picture. If they understand what it is they are trying to do, then showing them how to get there becomes easier. Any student can learn math, and have the capability to understand numbers, this just comes harder for some and easier for others. In my past I have benefited greatly from some math teachers, and fallen behind in classes where I was not getting what the teacher was talking about. Tutors can be a great help in pushing students over a difficult concept or idea. Then, when the student is back on track, they can take their education in their own hands again.
During the last four years, I have spent a large amount of time working with, and around middle school and High school students. I have spent time in the classroom, worked with small groups, and spent one summer working with multiple summer camps up and do ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I enjoy tutoring, especially with motivated people. I have much experience in translating difficult academic problems to meaningful skills. I still don't have my times tables memorized but can demonstrate difficult fractions and imaginary numbers to others. My experience in laboratory, design and classroom settings allows me to illustrate complex concepts meaningfully. I enjoy working one-on-one to help facilitate deeper understanding. I would consider working with special needs children or those with learning disabilities.
I have had experience in tutoring mathematics at local community colleges. I have also tutored chemistry, physics and many medical subjects informally. I have finished classwork in a medical program and have assisted with many classes, mostly in physiology related courses.

Math can be fun! I have activities for a variety of math subjects (particularly Algebra II, Geometry, and AP Statistics) that can break up the routine a bit. It is most important to make a human connection with the learner. Using his or her interests and strengths, I can customize my approach. By making this connection with others, I have found that I learn so much from teaching. Teaching and learning are inextricably intertwined. I have seen over and over that a small amount of individual attention can make a large difference in a student's attitude and achievement.

Moreover, these experiences have provided me with strong technical writing skills due to drafting laboratory results, research papers, presentations, and other literature reviews in various subjects.
I believe that each person has a different style of learning. Therefore, I try to adjust my teaching style based on the individual. While this is not possible in a classroom setting it is possible in a tutoring situation. Furthermore, I am a big proponent of making the subject personally relevant. Research shows that doing this streamlines the transition from short-term memory into ... read more

I have always found that one-on-one teaching is my forte. Even when I teach a class of 40 students, I find ways for them to work collaboratively, and so that I can also work with the ones that need the most help. I have been tutoring and teaching for 16 years, and I know all the tricks to being a good tutor, such as explaining a concept in as many possible ways in order to get the student to understand the concept. I have received high accolades as a tutor and teacher. This is what I was born to do. When I teach a class I have high expectations of the students.
