I like to start by encouraging the student to demonstrate what they know, and then give them a little nudge of guidance when they come to something that confuses them. If they're really stumped, then I try to teach them first from a conventional standpoint, then switch to a more example-based explanation. There is almost always an example or an analogy that can explain something that is confusing a student. Sometimes it takes a few examples before you find the one that makes sense to that person, but with a little patience it becomes easily understandable for the student.
I received a BS in Computer Science, software engineering, and a minor in Mathematics. I worked for one year at the TLC, or Teaching Learning Center, where upper classmen would tutor other students taking courses they had already taken and done quite well in. I tutored mostly computer courses (programming, ex ... read more

Teaching for 11 years in deaf education, I have enjoyed seeing a growth in my students’ math academic progress in middle school and high school level. Most children who are deaf have a delay in language learning. A deaf child who uses sign language, English is not their first language. Math, reading, and writing are the three academic subjects that require special goals with appropriate lesson plans to enhance each student’s weakness in specific areas in mathematics. Math It is my responsibility to understand each student's weakness in math and I need to take them further in understanding this subject area.
Graduating from three different institutions, I have earned two master and a bachelor degrees – MS in Biology and MA in Special Education, and BA in Biology. Math and Science have my main strengths in earning the degrees. Being deaf since birth, I have learned a lot about deaf ... read more

I really like to teach but only topics I really believe in. I am not a good salesperson for the same reason, if I don't believe in something you can see right through me. I have seen too many adults and kids taught the steps to something, do "A" then do "B" then do "C". This is fine until it is required that we need to do A,B,F or B,A,C. Then this poor person is left with no other angle. I am very creative and resourceful teacher, if I can teach an understanding of what "A" does, why we do "A", and when to do "A", then when A,B,F is needed the person has skills to think their way through it. I am also probably a "pusher" of people learning skills, I believe most people are more capable than they think they are.
I have always ended up in leadership positions which gives me the opportunity to teach. I generally supervise adults and in this role act as teacher for processes ... read more

My teaching style focuses on teaching students how to find the big picture. If they understand what it is they are trying to do, then showing them how to get there becomes easier. Any student can learn math, and have the capability to understand numbers, this just comes harder for some and easier for others. In my past I have benefited greatly from some math teachers, and fallen behind in classes where I was not getting what the teacher was talking about. Tutors can be a great help in pushing students over a difficult concept or idea. Then, when the student is back on track, they can take their education in their own hands again.
During the last four years, I have spent a large amount of time working with, and around middle school and High school students. I have spent time in the classroom, worked with small groups, and spent one summer working with multiple summer camps up and do ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I enjoy tutoring, especially with motivated people. I have much experience in translating difficult academic problems to meaningful skills. I still don't have my times tables memorized but can demonstrate difficult fractions and imaginary numbers to others. My experience in laboratory, design and classroom settings allows me to illustrate complex concepts meaningfully. I enjoy working one-on-one to help facilitate deeper understanding. I would consider working with special needs children or those with learning disabilities.
I have had experience in tutoring mathematics at local community colleges. I have also tutored chemistry, physics and many medical subjects informally. I have finished classwork in a medical program and have assisted with many classes, mostly in physiology related courses.

A Little Bit About Me...

Tutoring math has been a passion of mine since I was a child. I always helped my friends in school, and I volunteer tutored at various times throughout the years. I have over 4 years experience teaching high school math, as a licensed teacher in North Carolina. I have the most experience teaching Algebra II, Geometry, and AP Statistics, but I also taught Algebra I and Pre-Calculus. I worked as an engineer prior to becoming a teacher, so I can often relate how certain concepts are used in the “real world.” I am currently pursuing a Masters in Statistics at Portland State University. I would be happy to send my resume and references.
Math can be fun! I have activities for a variety of math subjects (particularly Algebra II, Geometry, and AP Statistics) that can break up the routine a bit. It is most important to make a human connection with the learner. Using his or her inte ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I believe that each person has a different style of learning. Therefore, I try to adjust my teaching style based on the individual. While this is not possible in a classroom setting it is possible in a tutoring situation. Furthermore, I am a big proponent of making the subject personally relevant. Research shows that doing this streamlines the transition from short-term memory into long-term memory.
I recently earned my M.S. in a psychology program that was heavily research based. Throughout my coursework, lab experience, and graduate teaching assistantship I have develop a high level of mastery in statistical analysis. This includes inferential and descriptive statistics as well as probability. Moreover, these experiences have provided me with strong technical writing skills due to drafting laboratory results, research papers, presentations, and other literature reviews in ... read more

More About This Tutor...

I started out as a student tutor in the early 90's in California. I finished my MA in mathematics in 2000 at Cal State Sacramento. I have been teaching the past 10 years (including as a grad student) and have experience with all levels of high school and college level mathematics and statistics, including College Math, Algebra, Trigonometry, Calculus, Elementary Statistics, Pre-algebra and Arithmetic. I currently teach at Arizona State University and Chandler-Gilbert Community Colleges as an adjunct math instructor.
