Graduate student looking to help students achieve their goals!

I have tutored children off and on since I was in high school. More recently, my time has been spent volunteering with The Giving Tree, where I tutored inner-city children after school and helped organize activities (museums, zoo, etc.) on the weekends. Math is one of my top subjects! I am especially good at helping kids who are struggling with the basics of math, especially if they are weak on their multiplication facts. That is essential, and I have many strategies and tricks that help a person learn them faster and better. I also am strong in teaching both long and short division. I spend time on decimals with how to change back and forth from decimals to fractions. Then I spend lots of time on fractions, so that later when they go into ratio, proportion, and percent they have no problems.

I am very friendly and try to put my students at ease by reviewing things to see what they already know and making them feel successful right from the start.

I like to start by encouraging the student to demonstrate what they know, and then give them a little nudge of guidance when they come to something that confuses them. If they're really stumped, then I try to teach them first from a conventional standpoint, then switch to a more example-based explanation. There is almost always an example or an analogy that can explain something that is confusing a student. Sometimes it takes a few examples before you find the one that makes sense to that person, but with a little patience it becomes easily understandable for the student.

I have seen too many adults and kids taught the steps to something, do "A" then do "B" then do "C". This is fine until it is required that we need to do A,B,F or B,A,C.
