My comments on tutoring Shakespeare : 33 years experience as a high school English teacher

I have taught English at the high school level for 33 years, both in public and private school. Currently, I am an instructor for a GED class. I team taught with a special education teacher for several years and encouraged the private school where I taught to hire a special education teacher at the high school level. I have taught all levels of English, from vocational English to low level students to honors students.
I particularly enjoy one-on-one teaching; I also enjoy asking students questions to draw from them the knowledge they are seeking.

A Little Bit About Me...

The majority of my secondary education has been dominated by the manipulation of words and formulation of arguments. My studies during college, culminating in the achievement of a BA in English, have allowed me to hone my mastery of the English language. Additionally, my four semesters as a writing center consultant at the University of Tennessee, Chattanooga, gave me a degree of teaching experience and familiarity with many of the common problems students (particularly those new to writing a thesis-driven paper) encounter when doing work for writing-intensive courses.
As a writing center consultant, I was instructed not to spend much time proofreading student papers or reviewing small minutiae. While earning my MA in English, I spent two years tutoring students in English and training/mentoring other tutors. For the last two years, I have been designing and delivering trianing curriculum. I have plans to return to Middle Tennessee State University in January 2012 to earn my PhD in Math and Science Education.
I love helping people, particularly children, reach their full potential by becoming life-long learners. Whenever I meet with a student, whether it be one-on-oe or in the classroom, I strive to identify his/her learning style and to create a connection to the lesson to his/her future experiences in the world beyond the classroom.
