My comments on tutoring Shakespeare : 33 years experience as a high school English teacher

I particularly enjoy one-on-one teaching; I also enjoy asking students questions to draw from them the knowledge they are seeking.
I have taught English at the high school level for 33 years, both in public and private school. Currently, I am an instructor for a GED class. I team taught with a special education teacher for several years and encouraged the private school where I taught to hire a special education teacher at the high school level. I have taught all levels of English, from vocational English to low level students to honors students.

As a writing center consultant, I was instructed not to spend much time proofreading student papers or reviewing small minutiae. Instead, my goal was to educate students about the fundamentals of writing papers, such as formulating a clear thesis and establishing a clear paragraph structure. To this end, I usually spoke with the students casually and allowed them to verbalize their thought process, offering suggestions when they struggled with a concept or answering questions about grammar rules. My goal was not to improve the student's paper specifically, but to improve the student as a writer.
