As a writing center consultant, I was instructed not to spend much time proofreading student papers or reviewing small minutiae. Instead, my goal was to educate students about the fundamentals of writing papers, such as formulating a clear thesis and establishing a clear paragraph structure. Being a student who had reading comprehension in early grades, I understand the shyness and frustration many students have with this difficulty. I respond to them with compassion, and often open up to them with a short story of my own experience. This way the student feels that I understand them and are more willing to learn the material I am trying to teach them.
