My comments on tutoring Literature : 35 years teaching experience as a high school English teacher and GED instructor

I have taught English at the high school level for 33 years, both in public and private school. Currently, I am an instructor for a GED class. I team taught with a special education teacher for several years and encouraged the private school where I taught to hire a special education teacher at the high school level. I have taught all levels of English, from vocational English to low level students to honors students.
I particularly enjoy one-on-one teaching; I also enjoy asking students questions to draw from them the knowledge they are seeking.

A Little Bit About Me...

The majority of my secondary education has been dominated by the manipulation of words and formulation of arguments. My studies during college, culminating in the achievement of a BA in English, have allowed me to hone my mastery of the English language. Additionally, my four semesters as a writing center consultant at the University of Tennessee, Chattanooga, gave me a degree of teaching experience and familiarity with many of the common problems students (particularly those new to writing a thesis-driven paper) encounter when doing work for writing-intensive courses.

A Little Bit About Me...

While earning my MA in English, I spent two years tutoring students in English and training/mentoring other tutors. For the last two years, I have been designing and delivering trianing curriculum. I have plans to return to Middle Tennessee State University in January 2012 to earn my PhD in Math and Science Education.
I love helping people, particularly children, reach their full potential by becoming life-long learners. I am a born teacher, and come from a family full of them. For better or worse for those around me, I am always ready to help with research skills and writing, reading comprehension, assimilating mass amounts of information into a comprehensible format (with/for my coworkers and friends). I believe that anyone is capable of mastering standardized tests as well as any task thrown at them by the most grueling of professors.
